SCHEN live wears DEGENEROTIKA

So here, finally in full colour, the beautiful Laura and her great outfit at her gorgeous and stunning STYLE! IT! TAKES! # 4 live concert!

Since SCHEN has a kind of colour concept behind her artistic work, it has been clear from the beginning that she will wear a blue dress, since blue is the colour of her first album "Happy Island" belonging to this show. So we decided to combine one of her 'electric blue' dresses with a black & beautiful framing harness of the avantgarde fashion label DEGENEROTIKA, highlighting areas of the dress & body and creating zones of visibility, giving it both a fetish and also a little androgynous note since the top belts of the harness may be reminiscent a bit of suspenders.
So her outfit was referring to two sub-topics of our "Re-Thinking PUNK!" motto:
the field of "Androgyny / Fetish / Queerness" and, obviously, "Visibility & Transparency (Shields, Holes, Nets & Cuts)".
Laura combined this outfit with a semi-transparent black top under the dress and kept her significant blue eyeshadow, the bright red lipstick and her 'talisman' Schen-chain.

Being a real DIY-music-woman like already introduced in two older posts about her, the rest and to her most important part came all by herself: her amazing and touching self-composed and self-produced music, playing keyboards and guitar live on stage and not to forget her gorgeous voice! She played the whole "Happy Island" album, and after CLEA CUTTHROATS's surprise performance (ok., I have to admit, I as curator of this project knew about it before *lol*) during the fourth song, the wonderful instrumental "The Sea", SCHEN had her own surprises in store: during the penultimate song "Whirl" - together with "Plays of Light" and "The Sea" one of the highlights of her first album - a black & white still of the Berlin Wall has been screened, which created interesting interactions with her gestures standing in front of it, her blue dress and the black harness, her shadow and the stage light as to be seen in these pictures, captured wonderfully by our photographer Jarka Snajberk.

The concert once more proved that SCHEN's music has a big future, if not commercially, then at least artistically. And so my very favourite song is one of her new songs, "Electronic Bubbles", and it came as the final highlight of her great concert! And together with Italian musician and film maker Nikita she made a wonderful video for it which had been screened also for the very first time at our special night!

Four times Laura, wonderfully captured by Jarka Snajberk: in real on stage, as shadow follwing her shadow on the screen and as girl in film

AFTERHOURS II: Elke Graalfs painting walls

Already in the morning hours after the first Style! It! Takes! night (see my first Afterhours post for this) it has been somehow clear that this project should continue. So there have been many afterhours, meetings and conversations in the weeks and months after the event.

Schon am Morgen nach der ersten Style! It!

A fine one took place in the studio of artist ELKE GRAALFS in Neukölln. The relatively empty place with its huge white walls, combined with great music playing from the little blaster, drinking coffee and eating Mum's delicious Lemon Cake has been a perfect place for getting the head fresh & free for new ideas for all tomorrow's projects...

In July, Elke had been on stage at the Style! It! Takes! performance of musician and artist NORA BELOW and fashion designer LOUIS FLEISCHAUER / AMF KORSETS. On this summer afternoon she was doing her art and I could watch her painting, while we were talking and listening to the music. Mum's delicious Lemon Cake not to forget. (^.^)

Im Juli war Elke bei der Style! It! Takes! (^.^)

Natürlich sind Dinge niemals fertig. Was (mit) der Kunst auch passieren kann:

Traditionally, clothings, fabrics, stitches, patterns and fashion play a big role in Elke's art.

VON FACEBOOK ZUR REVOLUTION ★ FROM FACEBOOK TO REVOLUTION

It!

It is good to know that not only projects like Style! It! Takes!, but also revolutions can be organized (initiated) through networking pages such as Facebook, dubious as they are in terms of business practices and data protection. The best known example being perhaps the so-called ‘Facebook Revolution’ of January 2011 in Tunisia, which will, however, enter the history books by the much more beautiful name of Jasmine Revolution.

VON TUNESIEN NACH ÄGYPTEN ★ FROM TUNISIA TO EGYPT

Since then, many of us have been keenly following the developments of the far from finished Egyptian Revolution. As is well known, the revolutionary wave that has been called the ‘Arab Spring’ rapidly swashed from Tunisia into the whole Arab world and led already in January 2011 to a revolutionary mass movement in Egypt. On February 11, 2011 longtime dictator Hosni Mubarak was forced by mass demonstrations, sit-ins, riots and, not to be forgotten, an enormous wave of strikes in the whole country to step down after almost exactly 30 years in power.

An extremely repressive and corrupt military council by  the name of SCAF (Supreme Council of the Armed Forces) has been ruling since then, the first more or less free parliamentary and presidential elections notwithstanding. The SCAF continues to brutally oppress the opposition and refuses to hand over power. Mubarak is gone but the revolution’s demands for bread (livelihood), freedom, social justice and dignity are far from being met. Thus, the revolution continues and the anger is more and more directed against the military council SCAF and the Ministry of Interior, who are responsible for the brutal repression of peaceful protests and sit-ins. Being unable to get the ongoing protests under control, the ruling military by and by erected walls in the streets around the Ministry of Interior where protests were held. They have thus succeeded in bricking themselves in, a military junta on the run from their own people...  The situation in spring 2012 in the capital Kairo is illustrated by the following map (Tahrir Sqare, by now world-famous, is in the upper left-hand corner):

GRÜSSE AUS ÄGYPTEN ★ GREETINGS FROM EGYPT

Da Style! It!

Because Style! It! Takes! is political at heart [see, for example, the entries about Popsimonova & Zarkoff, Anika and on Urban Development in Berlin] I asked one of the Egyptian groups on Facebook to send us some words to spread their message. „Operation Egypt“, that’s the name of the group, sent the following statement:

Aber wie Ihr so schön schreibt: „History is on our side, and the future is ours.”

Many thanks to ‘Operation Egypt’ for these wonderful and optimistic words. Your courage gives us so much hope. Many people all over the world will go on to feel for you and hope that one day you will succeed with your demands. But like you said: „History is on our side, and the future is ours.”

And if it is not alright in the end then it is not the end…

No wall campaign. Revolutionary artists paint the junta's walls away (13th of March 2012)
