Eisköniginnen

Wie alle meine Lieblingssportarten (neben dem Eiskunstlauf etwa auch die Rhythmische Sportgymnastik, aber auch das mit allen von mir gemochten akrobatischen, gymnastischen und tänzerischen Sportarten in Verbindung stehende Ballett als Tanzform) fristet das Eiskunstlaufen in Deutschland ja eher ein Schattendasein, daher gibt es passend zum winterlichen Wetter heute eine Vorstellung einer meiner Lieblingseiskunstläuferinnen. Sie ist keinesfalls die einzige und soll auch nicht die letzte hier Gewürdigte werden (der nächste Winter kommt bestimmt!), aber da ihr Aufstieg und ihre bisher größten Erfolge exakt in die Regierungszeit von Barack Obama fallen (!) und ich mich mit – auch oder leider gerade im Sport fast zwangsweise 'patriotisch' gefärbten – US-amerikanischen Themen mit dem baldigen Beginn der Amtszeit von Donald Trump reserviert zurückhalten werde (!!! *hüstl*), dachte ich, es ist ein guter Zeitpunkt für eine Hommage an eine der in meinen Augen glamourösesten Eiskunstläuferinnen unserer Zeit: Gracie Gold aus den USA! Ohnehin passt (neben der Rhythmischen Sportgymnastik und ein paar anderen) kaum ein Sport so gut zu diesem Blog & Projekt wie der Eiskunstlauf, denn er vereint fast alle Themen, um die es hier geht, auf wundervolle Weise: Mode, Schönheit, Érotique, Kunst, Performance, Musik & Tanz!

Prinzipiell gibt es vier olympische Disziplinen des Eiskunstlaufes: die geschlechtergetrennt abgehaltenen Wettbewerbe im Einzellauf (Männer & Frauen; keine Ahnung, was die Verbände mit Transgender-Läufer*innen machen...), den Paarlauf (leider nur 'heterosexuell' aufgeteilte Paare, auch das wäre perspektivisch zu ändern!) und den Eistanz (dito). Höchste Zeit wäre es auch, das Synchroneiskunstlaufen, eine schöne Form des Gruppensports, als fünfte olympische Disziplin anzuerkennen. Vieles an Formen, Figuren und Elementen überschneidet sich, aber der Einzellauf ist sicherlich die purste Form des Eiskunstlaufes und – auch weil ich die bei den meisten Tanzformen immer noch übliche heterosexuelle Aufteilung bei den Paaren nicht so gerne mag – auch mein Favorit. Bei Wettbewerben gibt es üblicherweise zwei Formen der Darbietung, das festgelegtere Kurzprogramm (engl. short program (SP)) mit nur höchstens 2 Minuten und 50 Sekunden Dauer und die freiere und längere Kür (engl. free skating (FS) oder long program (LP)), die 4 Minuten dauert (bei den Männern 4 ½ Minuten, weil, irgendwie müssen Männer immer noch einen 'drauf setzen', ne?). Soviel vorweg, später erkläre ich nebenbei noch ein bißchen mehr. Aber jetzt kommen wir erst einmal zu unserer Protagonistin und ihrem Werdegang in der Welt des Eiskunstlaufes.

Like all my favorite sports (beside figure skating for example also rhythmic gymnastics, but also ballet as form of dance connected with all the acrobatic, gymnastic and terpsichorean (dance-like) sports I like), figure skating in Germany leads a rather shadowy existence, therefore today – matching to the wintery snowy weather – I give an introduction of one of my favorite figure skaters. She isn't the only one and shall not be the last to be appreciated here, too (the next winter will come for sure!), but since her rise and her so far biggest successes fall exactly into the term of office of Barack Obama (!) and, with the imminent beginning of the term of office of Donald Trump, I will hold my fire aloof (!!! *cough*) with – also or unfortunately especially in sports almost inevitably 'patriotic' biased – US-American topics, I thought it's a good moment for a tribute to one of the in my eyes most glamourous figure skaters of our time:

Gracie Gold from the USA! Anyway, nearly no sport (beside rhythmic gymnastics & some others) suits so well to this blog & project like figure skating, as it combines almost all topics this here is about in a wonderful way: fashion, beauty, érotique, arts, performance, music & dance!

Basically there are four Olympic disciplines of figure skating: the competitions in single skating, held gender-segregated in men & women (I have no clue what the associations do with transgender skaters...), pair skating (unfortunately only pairs portioned 'heterosexually', this should be changed perspectivally, too!) and ice dancing (ditto). Further, it would be high time to include synchronized skating, a beautiful form of team sports, as fifth Olympic figure skating discipline. A lot of the forms, figures and elements are overlapping, but single skating surely is the purest form of figure skating and – also because I don't like the heterosexual segmentation of the pairs, still prevailing in most of the dance forms, that much – also my favorite.
At competitions usually there are two forms of performance: the relatively defined short program (SP) with no more than only two minutes and fifty seconds length and the more free and longer free skating (FS) programs (often called the "long program" (LP)) that last 4 minutes for ladies (for men 4 ½ minutes, since, somehow men always got to 'up the ante', right?).
As much beforehand, later I will explain a bit more en passant. But now in the first place we get to our protagonist and her development in the world of figure skating.

Geboren am 17. August 1995 in Newton, Massachusetts (USA) als Zwillingstochter
– ihre Schwester Carly Gold war bis vor Kurzem ebenfalls eine Wettbewerbs-Eiskunstläuferin –
einer Krankenschwester (ihre Mutter Denise) und eines Anästhesisten (ihr Vater Carl),
begann Grace Elizabeth Gold im Alter von 8 Jahren 2003 mit dem Eislaufen, nachdem sie andere Mädchen auf der Eislaufbahn gesehen hatte. Sie wuchs in Springfield, Missouri, auf, bevor die Familie nach Springfield, Illinois zog (es waren ihre Highschool-Jahre, später stieg sie auf eine Online High School um und graduierte 2014), und lebt jetzt in Redondo Beach, Kalifornien.
Wie viele Eiskunstläufer*innen hat auch sie Ballett-Unterricht genommen. Ihre Trainer*innen und Choreograph*innen hat sie im Laufe der Jahre recht oft gewechselt. Sie ist 1.68 m groß (wer mich kennt, es ist auch exakt meine Größe ^.^). [Quellen für diese Zusammenfassung].

Nachdem sie sich schon 2010 als viertbeste 'Anfängerin', oder schöner, Debütantin (engl. novice) in den U.S. Figure Skating Championships platzierte, erreichte sie zwei Jahre später Goldstatus, als sie die US-Meisterschaften 2012 auf dem Juniorinnen-Level gewann, mit einem ersten Platz sowohl für ihr Kurzprogramm als auch für ihre Kür (ihre Gesamtpunktzahl von 178.92 ist Rekord für eine Juniorin bei den US-Meisterschaften!). Im gleichen Jahr gewann sie auch Silber (ebenfalls in beiden Kategorien!) bei den 2012 World Junior Championships (!), erreichte aber direkt danach bereits den "senior"-Status (!, hierzulande besser mit Erwachsene übersetzt).
Als sie ein Jahr später bei den 'Senior'-US-Meisterschaften 2013 eine fast schon sensationelle
Silbermedaille gewann, war sie also praktisch bereits die zweitbeste US-amerikanische Einzel-Eiskunstläuferin ihrer Zeit, aber damit nicht genug, machte sie die Sache bei den US-Meisterschaften der Jahre 2014 und 2016 mit der Goldmedaille (2015 war es erneut Silber) eindeutig klar. Die internationale Eiskunstlaufwelt wartete also auf sie...

Born on the 17th August 1995 in Newton, Massachusetts (USA) as a twin daughter
– her twin sister, Carly Gold, has also been a competitive figure skater until very recently –
of a nurse (her mother Denise) and an anesthesiologist (her father Carl), Grace Elizabeth Gold started skating in 2003 in the age of 8 years after watching other girls at the ice rink.
She was raised in Springfield, Missouri, before moving to Springfield, Illinois (her high school years, later she switched to Online High School and graduated in 2014), and now she lives in Redondo Beach, California. Like many figure skaters, she has taken ballet lessions, too. Over the time, she has changed her trainers, coaches and choreographers quite often. She's 5 ft 6 in (1.68 m) tall (those who know me, it's exactly my height, too ^.^). [sources for this summary].

After already in 2010 she placed as fourth-best novice in the U.S. Figure Skating Championships, two years later she catched gold status when she won the U.S. Championships 2012 on the junior level, with a first place both for her short program as well as for her free skating (her total of 178.92 points is a record for a junior lady at the U.S. Championships!).
In the same year she also won silver (in both categories again!) at the 2012 World Junior Championships (!), but reached senior status already directly afterwards, so when she won a nearly sensational silver medal at her first Senior U.S. Championships 2013 you could say, by that time she already was the second best female US-American single skater of her time.
But not enough, in 2014 and 2016 she made things completely clear with the gold medal in the U.S. Championships (in 2015 it was silver again). So, the international figure skating world was waiting for her...

Big in Japan
2013 / 2014

Neben nationalen und kontinentalen Wettbewerben, Weltmeisterschaften und Olympischen Spielen gibt es auch – ähnlich wie in vielen anderen Sportarten – einen in diesem Fall von der ISU (International Skating Union) ausgerichteten Grand Prix of Figure Skating als Serie aufeinander folgender Wettbewerbe in verschiedenen Städten und Ländern. Teil davon sind zum Beispiel die Skate Canada und der NHK Pokal in Japan, einem der – bezogen auf den Einzellauf der Frauen – großen Eiskunstlaufländer der letzten Dekade (neben den USA, Russland, Südkorea oder auch, überraschenderweise, Italien). Auch wegen der schönen Bilder hier ein paar Erinnerungen an die NHK aus dem Jahr, in dem Gracie Gold erstmals bei den Erwachsenen Vize-US-Meisterin geworden war und bei der Skate Canada Bronze holte. Seit September 2013 wird sie von der Eiskunstlauf-Trainerlegende Frank Carroll gecoacht. Ihre Choreographin ist seither die in ihrem Feld nicht minder renommierte Lori Nichol. Es war eine wichtige Zeit für Gracie Golds Eiskunstlauf-Karriere.

Beside national and continental championships, World Championships and Olympic Games there is also – similar to many other sports – a Grand Prix of Figure Skating, in this case hosted by the ISU (International Skating Union), as a series of sequenced competitions in various cities and countries. A part of that are for example the Skate Canada and the NHK Trophy in Japan, one of the great countries of female single figure skating in the last decade (beside the USA, Russia, South-Korea or – surprisingly – also Italy). Also because of the beautiful pictures here some memories of the NHK from the year in which Gracie Gold had become vice-U.S. champion in the senior category for the first time and got Bronze at Skate Canada. Since September 2013 she is coached by legendary figure skating coach Frank Carroll. Her choreographer since this time is Lori Nichol who is similarly prestigious in her field. It was an important time for Gracie Gold's figure skating career.

Dabei greifen beide Hände die Kufe des Schlittschuhs (eine halbe Biellmann-Pirouette ist es, wenn nur eine Hand zur Kufe greift, dazu gibt es zahlreiche weitere Sonderformen und Variationen).

Das Ganze findet während einer sich mehr oder weniger schnell um die eigene Körperachse rotierenden Drehbewegung statt und schraubt sich spiralförmig in die Höhe (daher die im Englischen üblichen Eiskunstlauffigurenbegriffe spins & spirals). Etwas weiter unten habe ich das Video dazu eingebaut.

At that, both hands grasp the blade of the skate (a half Biellmann spin is when only one hand grasps the skate's blade, further there are numerous other versions and varieties). This all happens during a more or less fast rotating movement around the body axis (that's why such moves are called spins) and spirals upwards.

Ergebnisse, Musik und ein Sturz auf das Eis

Nachdem sie für ihr Kurzprogramm als Vierte und für ihre Kür als Dritte platziert wurde, wurde sie in der Gesamtwertung Vierte und verpasste knapp die Medaillen-Positionen der NHK Trophy 2013. Es war trotzdem ein gutes Ergebnis, besonders angesichts dessen, dass sie bei ihrer schönen Kür (siehe Photos oben) zu Pjotr Iljitsch Tschaikowskis Ballettmusik "Dornröschen" (engl. "The Sleeping Beauty") schon früh nach einem Sprung böse auf das Eis stürzte (was im Eiskunstlauf nichts ungewöhnliches ist).

Nicht nur, wenn ich daran denke, wieviel Ausrüstung zum Beispiel Eishockeyspieler*innen benutzen, um sich vor Verletzungen zu schützen, bin ich immer beeindruckt von der Beherztheit der Eiskunstläufer*innen und davon, wie 'locker' sie meist nach einem Sturz aufstehen.

Und Frauen wie Gracie Gold stehen mit Grazie auf (es war eine wunderbare Performance).

PS: Im darauffolgenden Jahr gewann Gracie Gold bei der NHK Trophy 2014 in Osaka die Goldmedaille. :-)

Ein weiterer wichtiger Wettbewerb in Japan sind die Japan Open, in die Gracie mit dem Gewinn von Silber 2015 (rechtes Photo im nächsten Kapitel) und Bronze 2016 eingezogen ist.

Results, music and a fall on the ice

After being placed fourth for her short program and third for her free skating program, she got ranked fourth in total and shortly missed the medal positions of the NHK Trophy 2013.

It still was a good result, especially considering that she badly fell on the ice (which is nothing uncommon in figure skating) after a jump early of her beautiful free skating program (see photos above) to the ballet music of Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky's "The Sleeping Beauty". Not only when thinking of how much equipment for example ice hockey players use to secure themselves from injuries, I'm always impressed by the courage and how 'easily' figure skaters mostly stand up after falling. And girls like Gracie Gold stand up with grace (it was a wonderful performance).

P.S.: The next year, at the NHK Trophy 2014 in Ōsaka, Gracie Gold won the gold medal. :-)

Another important trophy in Japan are the Japan Open, which Gracie entered winning silver in 2015 (photo to the right in next chapter) and bronze in 2016.

Pirouetten & Spiralen

Es gibt grundsätzlich drei elementare Kategorien von Pirouetten beim Eiskunstlauf,

* die aufrechten (Standpirouette, engl. upright spin, dazu zählen – trotz aller Akrobatik – auch beide oben gezeigten Figuren, also die Biellmann-Pirouette und verschiedene Himmelspirouetten),

* die parallelen (Waagepirouette, engl. camel spin), bei denen der nach vorne gebeugte Oberkörper und das nach hinten mit dem Knie über Hüfthöhe gestreckte freie Bein (Spielbein)

eine mehr oder weniger waagerechte Linie parallel zur Eisfläche bilden

[zusammen mit dem senkrechten Standbein bildet sich daraus von der Seite aus betrachtet eine Art 'T'- (oder, je nach Höhe des gestreckten Beins und Haltung des Oberkörpers, eine 'Y'-) Form, ähnlich einer Arabesque im 90° Winkel (à la hauteur) beim Ballett] und

* die sitzenden (in bzw. aus der Hocke ausgeführten) Positionen.

Nachdem wir meine Beispiele für die erste Kategorie schon gesehen haben, hier

zwei Figuren der parallelen Waagepirouetten:

Spins & Spirals

Generally, there are three basic categories of figure skating spins,

* the upright spin (despite of all acrobatics, both figures shown above – the Biellmann spin and various layback spins – belong to this category, too),

* the camel spin, in Europe also known – and maybe easier to understand – as a parallel spin, in which the bent forward torso and the free leg (working leg) extended backwards with the knee held above hip level form a more or less horizontal line parallel to the ice

[together with the perpendicular supporting leg forming – seen from a side view – either a kind of 'T' form, similar to a 90° angle arabesque (à la hauteur) in ballet, or, with high-stretched leg and torso, more of a 'Y' form] and

* the sit spin (performed in respectively out of the crouch / squat) positions.

After we've seen my examples for the first category already, here

Rechts eine eher ungewöhnliche Form der Waagepirouette (genauer, eines catch-foot camel spin), ein

(noch) nicht vollendeter 'donut spin'. Dabei wird der Kopf seitlich in Richtung des freien Fußes bewegt, so dass Kopf, Torso und das freie Bein eine Torus-artige Form (daher der Name 'donut spin') parallel zum Eis annehmen.

Nicht aus der Vogelperspektive, sondern seitlich betrachtet (wie im Photo) bildet sich eine klare 'T'-Form.

To the right, a rather uncommon form of a (parallel) camel spin (more exactly, a catch-foot camel spin), an (yet) unfinished 'donut spin'. Here, the head is moved sideways into the direction of the free foot, so that head, torso and the free leg form a toric shape (giving the name 'donut spin') parallel to the ice.

Not from a bird's-eye view, but watched from the sides (as in the photo), it shapes a clear 'T' form.

Kiss & Cry

All diese Figuren, Schwierigkeitsgrade, Innovationen, Präzision, Ausführung und nicht zuletzt der Ausdruck werden von Wertungsrichter*innen mit Punkten bewertet, die darüber entscheiden, welchen Platz eine Eiskunstläuferin am Ende einnimmt. Im Unterschied zu anderen Sportarten ist das eigentliche Ergebnis also erst bekannt, wenn das 'Spiel' schon vorbei ist. Bange Minuten des Wartens... Zeit für Emotionen... bei der Verabschiedung vom Publikum, dem Abgang von der Eisfläche... und danach auf der Wartebank in der nicht von ungefähr so genannten "Kiss & Cry"- Zone hinter der Bande...

All these figures, levels of difficulty, innovations, precision, performance / execution and not least expression are scored with points by judges who decide on the place a figure skater ranks in the end. So in contrast to other sports, the actual result is just known when the 'game' is already over. Anxious minutes of waiting... time for emotions... during the leave-taking from the audience, the departure from the ice... and afterwards on the waiting bench in the not by chance so called "kiss & cry" area at the side of the boards...

Sneak Peak

Für Gracie Gold begann das neue Jahr 2014 weniger mit Tränen, als vielmehr mit einem Paukenschlag [in der englischen Übersetzung habe ich mich für "bombshell" (neben drum beat das englische Wort für Paukenschlag) entschieden, da die Bedeutungen von "bombshell" zwischen Knalleffekt / Sensation (wie Paukenschlag) und 'Granate/Sexbombe' beide so passend und lustig in diesem Kontext sind]:

Nur etwa drei Monate nach ihrem Trainerwechsel und zwei Monate nach der NHK Trophy 2013
(von der wir oben Bilder und Video gesehen haben), erschien sie mitten in der Eiskunstlauf-Saison [September bis April] in einem ihrer – wie ich finde – schönsten Outfits ever (erste Photos oben) Anfang Januar 2014 zu den US-Meisterschaften und bald darauf zu den Olympischen Winterspielen in Russland, obwohl Kostümwechsel während einer Saison eher ungewöhnlich sind. Darüber und davon, wie es bis in die Wettbewerbe der aktuellen Wintersaison weiterging, werde ich mit wunderschönen Photos & Videos im zweiten Teil dieses Artikels berichten, wenn wir uns den großen Jahren der Gracie Gold {2014-2017} widmen. Denn das Beste kommt erst noch (ich hab's Euch ja gesagt: Gracie never stops!)! Soviel vorweg: es wird eine Augenweide!

For Gracie Gold, the new year 2014 started less with tears, but rather with a bombshell
[in German, I wrote "Paukenschlag" (literally: drum beat), but since the meanings of bombshell between surprise / sensation (like "Paukenschlag") and '(sex) bomb' are both so suiting and funny in this context, I took this instead of "drum beat" here]:

Only about three months after her change of coach and two months after the NHK Trophy 2013 (of which we have seen pictures and video above), she appeared in the middle of the season [September until April] in one of her – in my eyes – most beautiful outfits ever (first photos above) in early January 2014 at the US-Championships and soon after to the Olympic Winter Games in Russia, though changings of costumes during a season are quite uncommon. About that and how it proceeded until the competitions of the current winter season, I will report with beautiful photos & videos in the second part of this article, when we devote us to
the great years of Gracie Gold {2014-2017}. Because the best is yet to come (I told you: Gracie never stops!)! That much beforehand: it will be of astonishing beauty!

LesBTQs beim Abschlussball

Während viele Schüler*innen Berlins derzeit noch über ihren Abschlussprüfungen brüten oder für Nachschreibtermine lernen (oder auch nicht ^.^), finden natürlich auch schon alle möglichen Parties und Bälle statt oder stehen in Planung. In den USA & Kanada, aber auch in anderen Teilen der Welt, haben die im Frühjahr abgehaltenen ‚Proms’ eine recht große Bedeutung, wovon ja auch zahllose Filme handeln. In Australien und Neuseeland heißen sie „School Formal“ oder schlicht „School Ball“, in Kanada und im Vereinigten Königreich eher „Leavers Ball“, in Irland „Debs“ und in Polen „Studniówka“. Hier gibt es zwar zum Beispiel ‚Abibälle’, aber diese werden heutzutage meistens nicht mehr so förmlich abgehalten.

Ein Prom hingegen wird üblicherweise immer noch in ‚gepflegter Garderobe’ und mit Tanzpartner*in zelebriert. Nach traditioneller Lesart ist das entweder der Freund bzw. die Freundin der Schülerin bzw. des Schülers oder alternativ 'zumindest' ein (Tanz-)Paar, dass sich für den Anlass gefunden hat – auch wenn viele mittlerweile natürlich auch einfach so und / oder als Gruppe hingehen, sei es nun aus freiwilliger Entscheidung oder weil sie keine/n Partner*in gefunden haben. Typischerweise erscheint er dann in Anzug und Krawatte oder Fliege und sie in einem Abendkleid, oft kombiniert mit Schmuck und Accessoires.

Das ist exakt der Grund, weshalb ich in meinem 'früheren Leben' solche Anlässe gemieden habe wie die Pest! Natürlich nicht wegen den schönen Kleidern (die mochte ich sogar zu meinen Punk-Hochzeiten!), auch nicht, weil ich (grundsätzlich) was gegen Heterosexualität oder Männer hätte, sondern weil ich (wie viele viele andere) mich in diese Geschlechterordnung nie einfügen konnte und wollte. Wie schön, dass es heute auch das 'All-Girl-Modell' (und vieles andere) gibt... (^.^) Ouch! This is exactly the reason why I avoided such occasions in my 'earlier life' like the plague! Not because of the beautiful gowns, of course (I liked those even during the heyday of my punk times!), also not because I would have something (generally) against heterosexuality or men, but because I (like many many others) never could and never wanted to assimilate to this gender order. How great, that now there's the 'all-girl model' (and many things more), too... (^.^)

In jedem Fall befinden sich natürlich nicht alle in einer Beziehung – und auch nicht alle in heterosexuellen Beziehungen, wie es in der Tradition angelegt ist. Und so durchbrechen immer mehr Menschen diese Regeln, indem zum Beispiel junge Frauen als Partnerinnen zusammen hingehen anstatt mit ihrem / einem männlichen Freund oder Tanzpartner. Gleiches findet andersherum natürlich auch zwischen Jungs statt. Da ich diesen Blog auch als Femme-Blog verstehe, konzentriere ich mich in meiner Bilderstrecke auf weitgehend 'feminine' Photos, die Schüler*innen in den USA und Kanada zeigen, die sich als lesbische, bisexuelle, queere oder auch einfach eng befreundete Pärchen für den ‚Prom’ schick gemacht haben und zusammmen dort hin- und ausgegangen sind. Einige von ihnen sind nur für diese Nacht gemeinsam ausgegangen, einige sind bis heute zusammen, manche in Lebenspartnerschaft / Ehe oder auch in unverbrüchlicher, enger Freundinnen- und 'Schwesternschaft' – und ich nehme an, einige hassen sich jetzt vielleicht auch *lach*.

Alle von mir ausgewählten Photos sind aus der schönen "Lesbian Prom Gallery: Heartwarming Photos Of Girls Taking Girls To Prom, 1985-2015", wo es eine ganze Menge weiterer Photos gibt (und sie sammeln immer noch!). Es lohnt sich in jedem Fall einen weiteren Blick darauf zu werfen, besonders, wenn Du mehr an anderen, zum Beispiel 'androgyneren' oder 'maskulineren' Gender-Repräsentationen interessiert bist als ich (wobei auch in der Original-Galerie die 'femininen' Repräsentationen überwiegen). Meine Auswahl beinhaltet größenteils sehr feminine Pärchen (etwa verschiedene 'Arten' von Girly Girls, Femmes & Lipstick Lesben), oft in schönen Kleidern, Schuhen, Schmuck, Outfits und Stylings, die zu diesem Blog passen und von denen ich viele (nicht alle) sehr gerne leiden mag.

Girls Taking Girls To Prom

While currently many pupils of Berlin are still pondering over their final exams or are learning (or not ^.^) for repeat exams, of course all kinds of parties and balls are taking place already or are being planned, too. In the USA & Canada, but also in other parts of the world, the ‚proms’ held in spring are given a major importance, which is reflected in countless movies, too. In Australia and New Zealand they are called „School Formal“ or simply „School Ball“, in Canada and in the United Kingdom originally „Leavers Ball“, in Ireland „Debs“ and in Poland „Studniówka“. Though here in Germany there are for example ‚Abibälle’ (short form of the plural of 'Abiturball'; Abitur meaning high-school diploma / A level), but usually these are celebrated not that formal nowadays.

A prom however commonly still is celebrated in ‚formal wear’ and with a dance partner. According to the traditional interpretation that is either the boyfriend or girlfriend of the pupil / student or alternatively 'at least' a (dance) partner for that occasion, even though nowadays many are also attending as individuals and / or in a group of course – be it a voluntary decision or because they haven't found a partner. Typically he attends then in a tuxedo or suit with tie or bow-tie and she in an evening gown, often combined with jewellery and accessories (see photo & text in the box above).

Anyway, of course not all are in a relationship – and also not all are in heterosexual relationships, as it is calculated in the tradition. And so more and more people break through these rules, for example when young women are going together as partners instead of with their / a male friend or dance partner. Same happens vice versa between boys of course, too. Since I consider this blog also as a femme blog, in my photo gallery I concentrate on 'feminine' photos showing pupils and students in the USA and Canada, lesbian, bisexual and / or queer couples (sometimes also simply close and chummy friends) who have dressed up for the proms, dated and went out together as a couple. Some of them just dated for that night, some are staying together until today, some are in long-term relationship / marriage, some in steadfast, close friendship and 'sisterhood' – and I guess some may hate each other now, too *lol*.

All of my selected photos are from the beautiful "Lesbian Prom Gallery: Heartwarming Photos Of Girls Taking Girls To Prom, 1985-2015" where there are a lot of more photos (and they are still collecting!). It's definitely worth to take a further look at it, too, especially if you are more interested in other, e. g. more 'androgynous' or 'masculine' gender representations than me (although the 'feminine' representations are in the majority in the original gallery, too).
My selection mostly contains very feminine couples (like various 'kinds' of girly girls, femmes & lipstick lesbians), often in nice dresses, shoes, jewellery, outfits and stylings which suit to this blog and of which I like many (not all) pretty much myself.

Das Anstecksträußchen
The Flower Corsage

Eine nette Tradition ist das Anstecksträußchen oder Ansteckbukett (auf englisch corsage genannt, weil es ursprünglich an einer eben solchen angebracht wurde), das bei einem prom üblicherweise wie ein Armband um das Handgelenk getragen wird. Früher überreichte es typischerweise der Mann seinem 'Date' (oder ihren Eltern), doch unsere amerikanischen L-Girls haben sich diese Tradition längst angeeignet. Wunderbar! ♥

A nice tradition is the corsage (which got its name after the French word for the bodice of a dress, because originally it had been attached to such a corsage) that is usually worn at a prom like a bracelet around the wrist. Traditionally and typically, the man presented it to his 'date' (or her parents), but our American L-Girls have appropriated this tradition long since. Wonderful! ♥

In Deutschland gibt es immer noch keine gleichgeschlechtliche Ehe!
Zur Zeit hakt es (wie meistens) an der SPD, die in diesem Punkt nur für die entsprechenden Anträge der Opposition stimmen müßte... Die Chancen dafür nach der nächsten Wahl 2017 aber stehen derzeit düster. Wahrscheinlich wird Deutschland also das letzte Land Europas nach der Türkei und dem Vatikan sein, das die gleichgeschlechtliche Ehe legalisiert. ;-)

In Germany there still is no same-sex marriage!
Right now, mainly the Social Democrats (SPD) are to blame for this (like so often), as the whole opposition (Green Party and The Left) as well as officially also the SPD are pro same-sex marriage, only the Conservative Party (CDU/CSU) of Angela Merkel – governing together with the SPD – is against it, so that the SPD just would need to vote for the opposition's motions in that point and we would have it. But chances after the next election 2017 seem very dark right now. So presumably Germany will be the last country in Europe after Turkey and the Vatican to legalize the same-sex marriage. ;-)

Vielleicht dient dieser Post ja auch als Anregung und Aufmunterung für andere Frauen (und Männer) in Berlin und anderswo, es bei solchen oder ähnlichen Gelegenheiten (etwa Tanzkursen, Bällen oder Familienfeiern) unseren Protagonist*innen gleichzutun. Laut Statistik habe ich auch Leser*innen in der Altersgruppe der Schulabsolvent*innen, also wünsche ich Euch viel Erfolg bei Euren Abschlüssen, viel Spaß beim Feiern – und vielleicht gibt es der einen oder anderen von Euch für Eure Abschlussfeiern (auch wenn solche Anlässe vollkommen überbewertet sind) den letzten Ruck über etwaige Zweifel und Ängste. Wichtiger noch finde ich Veränderungen im Alltag (siehe meinen Berliner Photo-Aufruf unten). Und damit allen meinen Leser*innen einen bezaubernden Frühling in Berlin!

Maybe this post can be an inspiration and motivation for women (& men) in Berlin and elsewhere, too, to follow suit our protagonists at those kind of or similar occasions (e. g. dancing courses / classes, balls or family celebrations). According to statistics I have readers in the age group of school finishers, too, so I wish you good luck with your exams, lots of party fun – and maybe it gives some of you the final kick for your prom (even though events like that are totally overrated) against any doubts and anxieties.
