ZARKOFF live in Berlin

Right after the show of Zarkoff's project Sumerian Fleet at the wonderful DECADENCE party on Saturday in Berlin Arena Club (where I met such wonderful folks & friends like Thea & Jasa from Degenerotika Fashion, Evilyn Frantic, Louis Fleischauer (from AMF Corsets), Miranda Trash, Hannah, Anne, Marta, DJs Steve Morell, Ben Bloodygrave & Necrophil, Model Sinteque and many more, not to talk about lovely new people I met that night) tomorrow Zarkoff will play a solo show at the Loophole Club in Berlin-Neukölln which will definitely be the place to be that night!

If you don't know this amazing Croatian musician, producer & singer, here's his fantastic music video for his great new song "Jet Boy":

Official video: ZARKOFF - Jet Boy (2015)
from the critically acclaimed "Sweet Obsolete" album,
shot by B.A.K.A. productions, the notorious experimental film collective from Croatia.
A lo-fi journey into a bizarre summer adventure.
Directed by: G. Grey & Makotoichi

Zarkoff (whose real name is Sasha Rajkovich) is a Croatian musician known for his solo work and several collabs, such as Florence Foster Fan Club (with Le Chocolat Noir), Sumerian Fleet (with Alden Tyrell and Mr Pauli) and various duos with female singer and musician Popsimonova (who has been introduced in this blog several times and took part in two of our STYLE! IT! TAKES! events already). Zarkoff's solo output varies from techno to synth driven post punk and his latest album Sweet Obsolete even features prominent guitars. The album itself reached #1 on European Alternative Charts, staying there for 2 weeks.

Apart from his own productions, he works as a mastering engineer for established underground labels such as Creme Organization and R Zone, and runs the Sensorium studio. Zarkoff opened the very first STYLE! IT! TAKES! event in summer 2012 in an unforgettable performance with stunning dancer & performer Clea Cutthroat (here's the beautiful live video of it, always worth to be seen again).

Also live on stage will be VV & The Void (Berlin/LA/Melbourne), a music project by lovely Valentina Veil, a musician, producer artist and curator living between Berlin, LA and Melbourne. Her music, often described as shoegaze, drone, noir, atmospheric, goth, neo-psychedelic, experimental is a celebration of opposite energies: grace and disproportion, feminine and masculine, moon and sun, birth and death, angel and devil, light and dark, conscious and unconscious.

It surely will be a lovely evening with great concerts and - as far as I can see already from the Facebook-Event (opens in new tab) and other people who will be there - very beautiful, nice & lovely people in the audience. So, tomorrow night, the Loophole is the place to be in Berlin!

See you there!!!

IT! TAKES!

Introduction

After, at the stirring PATOKAI concert, fashion designs of the Argentinian label VIBRADIOS Fashion (worn by PATOKAI himself) and the charming hat creations of YAN HATS from Buenos Aires, combined with a dress by V I A N Fashion Berlin (both worn by dancer EN FINSTERNIS), have been staged already, for the last song "Infinitive" there has even been a further surprise: our brave heroine ANITA (known from her performance with Näd Mika at STYLE! IT! TAKES! # 4 for Fashion Week in January this year and from Näd Mika's Cassandra video) performed and danced in a straitjacket bridal dress (!!!) by conceptually working Berlin fashion designer SCHRÜPPE McINTOSH. I will come back to the topic of the straitjacket further below, as a start first the lyrics of the PATOKAI song we have chosen for this performance, because the socio-critical and feminist lines suit not only very well to our queer-feminist performer ANITA, but also to the conception of SCHRÜPPE McINTOSH's straitjacket.

ANITAs Hochzeit

ANITA's Wedding

Just like emancipated individuals (have to) free themselves from social conventions, ANITA had to 'free' herself from SCHRÜPPE McINTOSH's fashion step-by-step, too - simply to be able to move and breathe at all... The partly half-sheer (semi see-through) materials indeed allowed voyeuristic views on nude skin patches, but, despite of the overflowing material mass, the performer seemed less sheltered from such looks but rather bounded by it, something which has been even emphasized by the fringe of the white wig nearly covering the eyes - almost a 'Panopticon' of body, fashion and gender politics [for the Panopticon see: Michel Foucault - Discipline and Punish. The Birth of the Prison (1975). Incidentally, also the classic psychiatry (beside, for example, schools and hospitals) is structured according to the panoptical observation regime analysed in this book, and, we remember, we are talking here about a form of a straitjacket].

Along with that came numerous physical / bodily containments: the sleeves overlong and sewed up at the ends (!), oodles of fabrics piled up on top of each other and covering even face, hair, legs and shoes reaching down to the floor (see first photo at the top), the teddy / leotard under the veil appeared almost like a 'playsuit' (see the very last pic of ANITA's performance further below), with fixing knot in the nape, fixation belt (restraint) around the waist... but we got to see that not until later when ANITA emerged bit by bit out of her wedding dress like a butterfly out of its pupa (chrysalis)...

Are you enjoying yourself?
Are you happy with your life?
I don't think so

Get born, go old, die, infinitive
School, college, work, infinitive

PATOKAI really gave everything to let his gorgeous concert end in all the passion and totally rocked the show ♥

Be a girlfriend, be a wife, be a mother, infinitive
Grow up, got married, have children, infinitive

ANITA contrasted this by appearing like a ghost... ♥

Are you happy now?
I don't think so
Sos Feliz ahora?

... and - encouraged by PATOKAI - finally got rid of her containments... ♥♥♥

Selbstbestimmte Weiblichkeiten

Ich weiß gar nicht, weshalb unsere STYLE! IT! TAKES!

IT! TAKES! Show überhaupt mit Zarkoff live ♥...? (^.^)

# 1, The Wings of Desire bei Ed. # 5) hahaha... ♥♥♥

Autonomous femininities

I really don't know why our STYLE! IT! TAKES! fashion events always tend to end in some kind of 'nudity'... *lol*

♥ Edition # 2: Marlene von Steenvag's Opium & Bondage show, her erotic self-captivation cuts deep into her vulva...
♥ Edition # 3: Evilyn Frantic's spontanous fire show in the garden, dressed in not much more than some pasties and a glimmer of slip...
♥ Edition # 4: Clea Cutthroat undresses from LILY CUT and smudges herself with blood...
♥ Edition # 5: Anita emerges from a straitjacket bridal gown by SCHRÜPPE McINTOSH...
♥ Maybe it comes because everything once started with this: Clea Cutthroat stripping off gymnastically FRÄULEIN KINK - the very first STYLE! IT! TAKES! show ever with Zarkoff live ♥...? (^.^)
[all show links open in new tab, as usual]

This goes even for our (rare) male artists. Especially guitarists seem to have a yen to show at least their naked torso, too (Camera at Ed. # 1, The Wings of Desire at Ed. # 5) hahaha... Maybe it's a sign that (not only) artists (especially women) feel themselves comfortable, safe and free at our events and between our extraordinarily likeable guests... That would be lovely for a project wanting to celebrate - beside fashion and other things -  autonomous femininities (see our Manifesto)... ♥♥♥

Ein Zwangsjacken-Entwurf von / A straitjacket sketch by SCHRÜPPE McINTOSH

Ist (Nicht-)Mode eine Zwangsjacke?
Is (non-)fashion a straitjacket?

SCHRÜPPE McINTOSH presents: New views on & interpretations of the straitjacket

Flyer with info text by SCHRÜPPE McINTOSH

Despite her funny label name, in her bachelor thesis SCHRÜPPE McINTOSH had concerned herself with a rather serious subject - with the topics of psychiatry and the material forms in clothing connected with it. Briefly: with the norms of apparel / clothing in the history of psychiatry. Out of researches, theoretical and modish involvements with this subjects, mostly ignored in our societies, in summer 2013 her bachelor thesis emerged with the title "Is (non-)fashion a straitjacket? Contemplation about the topic of individualisation through fashion and clothing as well as their functions, especially in the context of clothing norms in the history of psychiatry".
In October 2013, an exhibition with the title “Straitjacket. New perspectives and interpretations” arised from that, which has been shown in the context of a festival with the fine title "Art is crazy" in the Saxon Museum of Psychiatry (Sächsisches Psychiatriemuseum) in Leipzig...

An exciting and fascinating fusion

Wow, what a combination: performer and dancer ANITA, who is - also in scientific terms - very active in feministic politics and critical of the church (wedding dress!), musician PATOKAI, who works in Argentina as a doctor in a polyclinic (being married with a fashion designer) and SCHRÜPPE McINTOSH, who has considered critically the problem of psychiatry from the angle of a fashion designer, find together for a performance at Berlin Fashion Week! A culmination finale of our stage programme this time and in this form definitely unique, not only in Berlin. As curator I want to express my delight and gratitude for having had the honour to cooperate with these three fascinating, critical and exceptional endearing individuals. My heartfelt thanks! ♥♥♥

PATOKAI the Square Wave Knight jumps to Berlin!!!

PATOKAI drawn (by Caseros City Studio)

Kicking Glass

[Original text in German, English translation below]

IT! Visionen! Und tolle Leute! Und ich kann Euch sagen:
PATOKAI - Top!!!

PATOKAI jumping off - shot by Nat Sbert

Some people just seem to do everything properly. For example the Electro-Sci-Fi / Synthwave / Electroclash / Futurepunkpop act PATOKAI from Buenos Aires in Argentina. I mean, we indeed get many mails and messages, enquiries and offers. Friendly ones (fortunately the most of them), interesting, beautiful, odd, funny, totally unacceptable, groundbreaking, annoying, wonderful, impertinent, splendid and cute ones (those I like the most!). And even more. But many have in common that they are much too short-termed or didn't think about very basic things. Obviously, some have spent little thoughts about our project before or have difficulties to think their way into the complexity of our events. We are, for example, neither a booking agency nor do we own a club, we don't see ourselves as concert- or party-organizers and we are no promoters, too. Not even a music blog we are. We evolve every STYLE! IT! TAKES! from the ground up (including motto / topic, location, fashion, forms of expressions...) and have only space for about four selected live acts and a few DJs in the whole year after all. So, if we are anything, then we are a project for wonderful things of all kinds (read our Manifesto!!!) - fashion and beauty ahead, but even much more. Great music for example. The little revolutions of the everyday life. The beauty of arts and nature. Celebrating femininities, styles and dances of all kinds! Visions! And terrific folks! And I can tell you: PATOKAI - Top!!!

Circo Eléctrico

"With our event called CIRCO ELÉCTRICO we wanted to create a place
for those electro artists who couldn’t find their place in the world."
(PATOKAI)

While PATOKAI was playing live syncro duet with Chico Ninguno @ Circo Eléctrico III in Cordoba City
6th of April 2013 (Ph.

Same procedure every year. ♥♥♥

First, 'Pato', who - like we just have heard - himself has initiated with his friends an ambitious, multimedial series of events in Argentina named Circo Eléctrico, had found our page on Facebook - and liked it. Then, in November 2013 he has written a mail to me. Introducing himself, explaining what he is doing and suggesting to me, to give his music a listen. When I would have time and fancy (I didn't have back then!). In whole sentences, not in internet newspeak. Obviously he had checked out our project and has seen, that we are doing our events half-yearly to the Berlin Fashion Week. In January and in July. Same procedure every year. He indicated interest to perform at ours, since he would like our project and the connection of fashion and music very much. With this, he made himself stand out of the majority of mails by musicians and DJ's, who tend to forget or simply ignore, that we are a fashion project first of all (especially male musicians forget or ignore that nearly always!). He didn't ask for a contribution for the event in January, which has been in the making at that time already anyway. Normally, that would have been too short-termed, too. No, for July 2014, for the - back then - after next Fashion Week, which is approaching now. There would be a voyage to Berlin in the planning, he could be here then. But not enough with that, he also contemplated about the fashion and wrote, his wife would be a designer, she would also come to Berlin. Links inclusive. And both of them would have even more contacts into the fashion world of Argentina. Wow!!! :-) Being in stress, he admittedly got just an adjourning short answer by me for now back then, but I believe, never ever a to us previously unknown person has done so many things right at once!!! ♥♥♥

Einfach toll!!!

As matters stand sometimes, unfortunately PATOKAI had to wait quite long for an answer then. Stress. But, one day, muse kissed me and I devoted myself to his music. Awesome!!! A marvellous widening of our great musicians we already had in our live programme. Bombastic Electro sound, magnificent to dance to. Fantastic - English and Spanish - lyrics, as far as I understand them. Club music. Underground-Pop-Music! Rocks! Gorgeous! ♥

So, I didn't forget - we never forget somebody!!! That's what I wrote to him, too. Of course, I excused myself for letting him wait for so long for an answer, but I felt sorry every day more on which I communicated with him and his wife (whose wonderful works I will introduce to you here soon, too). Simply awesome!!!

"We didn’t have places in Argentina where to express what we wanted to do and feel comfortable doing it. I don’t know, if we tried to do something in places where rock was played we were too electronic to play there, or if we tried to do an event in a discoteque, a typical electronic nightclub, they told us that we were too rockers to play there."
(PATOKAI)

I fear, we will not be able to provide PATOKAI with such gigantic stage sets he's used to from Circo Eléctrico in Argentina when he will play soon in Berlin ... ;-)

Control

Dann ging alles ganz flott. Zusage Berlin. Zusage Buenos Aires. (^.^)...).

PATOKAI live with black make-up 2012

Then, everything speeded up. Commitment Berlin. Commitment Buenos Aires. Asking for the technic rider - mailed promptly and neat (you can't imagine at all, how often a fashion blogger has to remind musicians to send a technic rider!!! I even had to compile one myself once... (^.^)...). Asking for press photos - press photos are mailed to me at record speed. That's how it makes fun!!! And after I wrote now a since a long time projected sermon about the topic FAQ or, better to say: what-I-always-wanted-to-tell-musicians-and-DJ's-interested-in-taking-part-at-our-events instead of introducing to you PATOKAI and his music, you now please turn on the player immediately and watch a live video of his early hit "Control" (from 2011). Even though the new record is even very much better, the song is a cracker, it has great - unfortunately much to contemporary - lyrics and is very catchy:

CONTROL IS FANTASY WE ARE SUBMERGE ON
IMPOSED BY SOCIETY TO KEEP US WARM
TO RULE SECURITY IN YOUR LIFE
BUT IT´S A LIE, A BIG BIG LIE

RULE INSECURITY!

CONTROL IS A FANTASY - EL CONTROL ES UNA FANTASIA

The Square Wave Knight

Musically, "Control" reminds me (not only because of the Vocoder voice) beside others a bit to the great Minimal-Electro-project of Canadian Dave Rout from Datafreq (songs like "(I Like) Claudia Bruckens Lips" or "Just Like 1981" from the album "Fun For The Whole Family", Das Drehmoment Records, Berlin 2006), who are listened to and liked very much in some specific Berlin circles (including me) - even though PATOKAIs music is more complex and deep in my ears. And, of course, to Kraftwerk & Co, too. Generally, the very big names are listed as influences particularly, beside Kraftwerk, David Bowie and Michael Jackson (!) especially New Wave, Synth- und Electro-Pop-legends of the late 70s and 80s like Ultravox, Gary Numan or The Normal and certainly Depeche Mode, but also their Epigoni of the noughties like Miss Kittin & The Hacker, Ladytron or Fischerspooner. But actually, the music is far more diverse and is - depending on each song - much better described with the funny self-created style names used at Soundcloud as terms of description like Electro-Sci-Fi, Futurepunk & Futurestep, Spacetechno, Robotclash or Electropunk / ElectroRock...

PATOKAI makes music for quite some time. Earlier he experimented and tried to create electronic music with guitars together with fellows, since 2008 he plays as PATOKAI bass, operates keyboards and synthesizers, drum-machines and voice-modulators, which are played live, are sequenced and operated and controlled at the same time and symbolize a symbiosis of men and machine. He also writes the lyrics, sings and produces himself. The first PATOKAI release was published 2011 ("Control"-EP), followed by remixes (2012) and the EP "Automaton" (2013). His just released first album is titled "The Square Wave Knight" (2014) and is like a said simply brilliant!

Though the album, containing 11 songs in total, has no flaws at all, here my favourite songs and highlights: The opening number "Kicking Glass", a catchy love song, oscillating between Future Pop and gorgeous 80s-Pop - a summer hit! The spacy and technoid "El Mundo Virtual", fascinating me totally (I absolutely want to hear this live!!!), the powerful, twirling and driving Electro Clash track "La Realidad", the dark, slow and sound-narcissistic "Thorns" (here I hear the ghosts of Daniel Miller / The Normal / early Depeche Mode), the ElectroRock (!!!) number "Odisea", which sounds with its alienated guitar sounds like Rock'n'Roll on Ecstasy - and eminently the last two songs again. "Amnesia" is (like many tracks on the record) very danceable und marvellously spherical at the same time - what a magnificent club sound!!! The last track, the EBM number "Infinitive" reminds me musically a bit of the glorious Alien Sex Fiend indeed. The lyrics are also superb and it is interesting that PATOKAI focusses here in his social criticism strongly on (only seemingly overcome) female live perspectives: "be a girlfriend, be a wife, be a mother, infinitive". Very congenial - and the song rocks!!! Incidentally he will perform in VIBRADIOS fashion (also from Argentina) and there will be further (not only) modishly surprises during his concert.

Aug. 2013

So, along with all the fashion (more than ever!!!) we will have a very varied music programme again this time. The curatorial decision, in which order both of our live acts will perform, wasn't too hard this time because of the musical styles. Since, we got no support acts and headliners, but all participants are the same important and are acting and cooperating together, which makes our event so charming and unique. So, first the superb Hot Wave project THE WINGS OF DESIRE (Israel / Berlin) I already introduced to you here recently will perform and play. And then you can dance and cut up the floor to PATOKAI, before our DJs FRAU RICA, STEVE MORELL & NÄD MIKA will burn the candle at both ends and unleash the nightly party...

We are looking forward very much!!!
