The Politics Of The Past

The first model of H&M's fall fashion video in the middle and a bearded guy to the left...

[Dies ist Teil III der Artikel-Serie "Von H&M nach Kobane". Für Neueinsteiger*innen: Teil ITeil II]
[This is part III of the series of articles "From H&M to Kobani". For newcomers: part I, part II]

H&M's fall fashion video

In the last part I have submitted to you my thoughts about the statement of H&M to the criticism that they would have 'stolen' the look and design of their khaki-green jumpsuit from Kurdish female fighters - a relation H&M tried to allay. Nevertheless in the promotional video iself there are some hints rather corroborating the relationship than dispelling it. Along with that I want to provide to you also some background informations about movements and 'parties' involved in the Kurdish theme, which could roughly be categorized into three sections: the representatives of the politics of the past, of the politics of the in-between and of the politics of the future.

We start with the "politics of the past" and in the course of this unfortunately it will get quite nasty today, too (sorry, we need to go through that – also in a metaphorical sense!). As contrast and little 'compensation' I'd first like to show you finally the beautiful H&M promo video, if you haven't seen it already anyway! :-)

Islamistischer Terror & Rassismus

Islamist Terror & Racism

Relatively early in the video we briefly see a full bearded man on the side of the road (see photo on top), what might be evocative of popular clichés of fundamentalistic 'Islamists'. Even though it is completely nonsense of course to believe that these would be identifiable by beards or by any kind of view, it conforms a 'picture' widely spread in society (like, by the way, also the three female figures each embody specific 'women types'). The man on the first photo even could be interpreted as a 'terroristic sleeper', who doesn't take part in the life of society, but stands 'lurking' apart in this case from the goings-on of a pedestrian area (presumably in East Village or Greenwich Village in Lower Manhattan) in New York City (!), the city of the terrible Islamist attacks on the World Trade Center nearby from 9/11, which belong to the 'collective memory' not only in the USA. Both neighborhoods mentioned are famous for their LGBT scene, what suits with the homoerotic-lesbian ‚subtext’ of the video.

However our 'Amazon', equipped with magical powers, in the video has the ability to immediately stall all passersby with a simple snap and to quasi 'freeze' them, what might strengthen or even causing the impression of the 'passivity' of the bearded man on the screenshot. Later in the video we see a second full bearded man (see picture below) who passes, his head bowed, a shop with lightly clad mannequins (or pictures of these). Both men seem to be (unconsciously) recognized by the female protagonists, though in the video they otherwise are interested in the other women 'only'. But theoretically it could also be about a conspiratorial ally, a private detective, a bearded hipster or a thoughtful passerby, who thinks about what he will cook for his partner and his children now – or suffers lovesickness. ;-) So we should be careful with our perception, which is often overlayed by racist, islamophobic or sexist clichés. One way or the other, I don't believe however that the two of them have been cast and staged for the H&M video in the described setting entirely without any ulterior motives.

Suspicious? The third H&M model with the discussed jumpsuit reminiscent of Kurdish female fighters in the middle and a bearded guy to the right...

Or is it all an over-interpretation after all? Which consequences also to the fashion world it can have when religious zealots gain influence, anyhow might be clarifed by the following photo from the second largest Iraqi city Mosul which has been conquered by the ISIL terrorists, who also immediately destroyed unwelcome statuaries and graves (!) there. And to say it very clearly: the problem is not veiling as a self-paced, religious practice of millions of women in the world, but totalitarian enforcement in concrete situations (in this case on the presumably male Muslim shop owner). Hence this picture can not (or, no more than allegorical) mirror the real ISIL terror – displacements, homicides, executions, (mass) rapes, slave trade and women trafficking... What might appear on the photo even also somehow aesthetically appealing, is in reality sheer fascist terror. And the accomplishment of course has been made by the shop owner (apparently offering very chic fashion) and it are only shop-window mannequins. If it would have been real women, ISIL would have raped them or sold them as slaves. :-(

Mosul shop owners said they had been instructed to cover the faces of both male + female mannequins

IS (Islamischer Staat)

Entstehung:

Finanzierung:

ISIL (Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant)

"ISIL is a troop anyone can hire (rent)"
Nihad Latif Kodscha, mayor of Erbil, the capital of the Kurdish autonomous region in Syria, about the ISIL terror troops (quoted in: Die Welt, 9th of Oct. 2014)

Cartoon from Times of Israel Blog

Enough has been said in the media about the 'richest terror group in the world'. Basically, every word about these jihadi-Salafist slaughterers is too much and they post their fascistic atrocities themselves every day in the internet. Nonetheless some basic informations.

Formation:
2003 in Iraq (with frequent changes of name),
till 2013 Iraqi part of the global terror network Al-Qaeda

Allies: Boko Haram (Sunni Salafi terror organisation, Nigeria), Abu Sajaf (islamistic terror organisation, Philippines), Ansar Bait al-Maqdis (Salafist jihadist terror organisation from Egypt (Sinai Peninsula)) and many more

Supporters:
Mercenaries and fighters from all over the world (also from Europe and the USA)
Qatar: financing, legal recruitment of IS fighters, violating the UN resolution 2170 which demands governmental sanctions against ISIL
Saudi Arabia: private war financers tolerated by the government, since 2011 training centre for building up Salafist militias in Syria (!), has changed its position to an anti-ISIL position just in end of July 2014
!!! Both dictatorial regimes are provided from the West (also from Germany) with weapons !!!
Turkey (NATO member!): most important transit country for IS fighters, toleration of (armed) border crossings and public recruitment for the IS, public propaganda appearances, toleration of weapon transports and ISIL training camps, medication of injured IS fighters in Turkish hospitals, business with ISIL, brutal crackdown and restraint of Kurdish fighters
USA & EU: indirectly, for example parts of the arms deliveries to the ambivalent so-called FSA (Free Syrian Army) has fallen into the hands of ISIL through 'volte-faces'

Sourcing:
Donations especially from Qatar and Saudi Arabia, raw oil from conquered oil fields, selling works of art from illicit excavation (from archaeological sites) and the plunder of museums, sale of women as „brides“ or „slaves“, taxes“ and „tariffs“, hostage-taking (ransom money), robbery, plunder, expropriations

Methods: bomb attacks (in Iraq since 2003), kidnapping / hijacking, war, homicide, mutilations, (mass) rapes, executions, cutting off heads, crucifixions, mass displacement, sale of women, enslavement of women, forced recruitment, lashings and so on...

Target: building up a 'califate' exclusively for 'believers' (by definition of ISIL – most of their victims by the way are Muslims!), at first in Syria and in Iraq, in the end globally.

Main opponents:
* the Iraqi and Syrian Yazidi and Kurds (Peshmerga in Iraq, in Syria the party PYD and its People's Defence Units YPG / YPJ (women's units), Turkish Kurds (for example from the PKK guerilla),
* parts of the insurgent ‚Free Syrian Army’ (FSA),
* governments of the Shiitic Iran (theocratic Islamic dictatorship), of Iraq and Syria (dictator Assad),
* the US-led Anti-IS coalition (with France, UK, Australia, Jordan, Lebanon, United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Egypt and many more), which under pressure also has been joined by the Western allied dictatorships in Qatar & Saudi Arabia

Note: Even if ISIL would conquer Iraq and Syria (what fortunately will not succeed!), in its fanatic and imperialistic thirst for major power they would never stop. Mecca (in distant Saudi Arabia) - sure! Istanbul (Turkey) - Duh! Afghanistan, Pakistan, Chechnya - oh, we got many friends there! But the 'ultimate goal' of course is the conquest of Jerusalem (Israel). This they have in common with many other fascists.

Against them help only heavy weapons - and humour!

For example on Twitter, out of the Arabic name for ISIL, 'daesh', has been made the hashtag #daeshbags (derived from 'daesh' and 'douchebags')... (^.^)

Difference btw ‪#‎daesh pigs and mosquito?
One suck blood, annoy ppl and dont let them sleep. The other is an insect

HoGeSa (Hooligans gegen Salafisten)

HoGeSa (Hooligans against Salafists)

While the peoples of the Middle East are afflicted with the ISIL terror every single day, recently of all things German neo-Nazis and right-wing hooligans have presented themselves as 'spearheads' of the fight against 'Salafists'. Wanting to substitute the terroristic ISIL crap with racist Nazi crap is so absurd that I want to make no further words about it. Just take a look at them - their mugs are so ugly that they better should be hidden under an ISIL balaclava and are buried together with them...
(I had to change the photo above into black & white mode in order to keep this beautiful blog free of Germany flags (^.^)...)

Conservative German president Gauck recently warned of the left-wing (!) party (Die Linke) in Germany. This cartoon makes fun of it, saying to him that the 'Honest Fritz' (in the middle) has some other problems:
the right-wing hooligan and the fundamentalistic 'Islamist' standing next to him... ;-)

‪#‎Kobane

The army of NATO partner Turkey being bored watching the ongoing ISIL massacre in the nearby Syrian-Kurdish town of Kobani (October 2014) (Photo: AFP)

And finally:
The West and its partners...

"Erdogan wanted to be the new sultan, instead he will be the last president of Turkey."
Vernacular (via Twitter) about the inglorious role of Turkey's president Erdogan concerning the situation of the Kurds in Syria and Turkey itself

"Sometimes i dream about moving Kurdistan in another place in the world. Tired of this fucking middle east. Even north pole will be fine. I prefer pinguins as neighbour than these crackheads."
Kurdish tweeter #CahitStorm on Twitter

To the politics of the past also belong – without a relation to the H&M video – the phony politics of the 'Western' countries like Germany and the USA and the downright disgusting role their partners and allies Turkey, Qatar and Saudi Arabia are playing (see ISIL info box above).
The last two are characterized by political systems not that different from those targeted and practiced by ISIL: human rights and women's rights are trampled on in these dictatorial absolute monarchies. Nevertheless, again and again they are supplied with heavy weapons by the West (e. g. from the USA, but also from Germany, which means authorised by social democratic SPD minister Sigmar Gabriel). Same goes for Turkey, which carries on a 'dirty war' against the Kurdish population since decades, lets ISIL do in Turkey what it likes and (equipped also with German tanks) stands on the sidelines of the drama of Kobani on the border nearby, while civilians and journalists staying out there frequently are attacked with tear gas.
Kurdish tweeter #Cahit Storm, who has been staying there for weeks, in October put it in his own sarcastic humour like that:

Lot of questions about the turkish army: they take a sunbath since 3 weeks and drink mojitos. And twice a day they attack us. ‪#‎Kobane

At the Turkish-Syrian border, NATO partner Turkey prefers to attack Kurdish civilians and international journalists than helping the Kurds in nearby Kurdish-Syrian town of Kobani, under siege by ISIL since mid-September (Photo: AP)

One of the inconsistencies but also dawns of hope of the current situation is that under increasing pressure of the world public Turkey – after procrastinating it for weeks – finally has allowed Iraqi Peshmerga-Kurds and insurgent Syrian FSA units to travel through its territory to support the Kurds in Kobani. Furthermore Turkey has granted asylum for up to 300.000 (mainly Kurdish) refugees from Syria – something of which Germany could take a leaf out of this book. But the best news is that the brave defenders of Kobani repel the attacks of the ISIL #daeshbags since in the meantime 41 days and have started to drum them out of their besieged town! :-)

Apart from the good news, this time it really has turned a bit creepy. Since it is about an optimistic blog here, it will increasingly get better. :-) Further along the H&M video, in the next part we will address the politics of the in-between, before when all is said and done we arrive at the politics of the future then. Ok., one more laughter.
A kiddingly request to Barack Obama: Hole in at least one plan... ;-)
Only, if it's in the light of the more than questionable allies from the 'Gulf States' (in German: 'Golf' States) a good idea, to of all things try it with golf...? (^.^)

Obama!!! Hole in one! * Obama!!! Loche wenigstens einen ein!

Von H&M nach Kobane (II)

In the beginning of the H&M Fall Fashion Video, this model in a khaki-green dress is crossing a pedestrian zone in NYC. She seems to be very powerful, free and confident, and is able to stop anybody immediately in the story. Same could be (hopefully) said about the brave Kurdish fighters, defending themselves from the attacks of the IS(IL) terrorists in Kobani (Northern Syria) and elsewhere. ;-)
all video stills by STYLE! IT! TAKES! Berlin Blog

In the first part of my series of articles "From H&M to Kobani" I reported to you about the commotion over the khaki-green jumpsuit from the current H&M fall collection, which according to the views of critics is more or less stolen from the 'look' of armed Kurdish female fighters who suffer in the wars in Syria and Iraq and are oppressed in Turkey. Here now my thoughts about the astonishing official statement of H&M thereto (documented at the end of part I), which tried to invalidate the criticisms with a pure modish argumentation:

1.
Die Macht der Kund*innen

"The opinions of our customers are very important to us and we will keep this feedback in mind for future collections." (H&M Statement)

*lach*

The Power of the Customers

"The opinions of our customers are very important to us and we will keep this feedback in mind for future collections." (H&M Statement)

First, it's remarkable that H&M feels compelled at all to react to such criticisms in the internet. Like we all know, such 'shitstorms' happen everyday in the web. This shows the power of the customers and the power of the bloggers as well. Even more remarkable that the fewest of fashion blogs put this power to use - at least, when it's not about furs. *lol*

A beautiful scene: the encounter of the first model, a bit reminiscent of an amazon, with the second model, who combines the disputed jumpsuit with a soft-pink fur coat and a soft-pink lace shirt.
In the background ancient women figures, underlining the feminine (and homoerotic) subtext of the video. All main characters in the video are female.

2.

We are sorry – but we are innocent!

Whereas H&M doesn't want to connect the dots with the fighting Kurds (no word about that in the statement), but explains / justifies form (jumpsuit) and colour (khaki) purely with modish reasons, the question arises why they excuse themselves at all. Since, after all, neither overalls nor green tones commonly are cause for apologies. Well – as an international corporation one just doesn't want to spoil things with customers (to which, of course, also people with Kurdish background belong to, like the brisk involvement in the debate has shown) and doesn't want to put anyone's noses out of joint. So there is an apology even though the correlation itself is denied. According to the motto: „I didn't say that at all, but if you have heard it, I'm sorry“...

Flirty: the roles of the three models and the relations to each other are not totally clear in the video. But all encounters are flirty. Further, the model which is seen here has 'magical skills'. Directly after this encounter, a 'multiplication' of the blonde model happens... (see next photo)

The customers wanted it that way!!!

But even more remarkable then the coup that in the end just these customers are made ‚responsible’ for the choice – with their wishes and their demands! It may be true that from the side of the customers since some time there has been "an increasing demand on jumpsuits" (H&M statement) – but I deem it extremely unlikely that these customers stormed into the shops and told H&M their wish for jumpsuits in the Kurdish 'PKK / YPG style'. The first of them an originally Turkish-Kurdish guerilla organisation which incidentally is listed among others on the 'terror lists' of the NATO, the EU, the USA and of Turkey and is in Germany, for example, banned since 1993  – even though the call for a repeal of this classification gets louder and louder not only from the Kurdish side and in my view with good reason (more about that later).

So the question remains how it came to the characteristic of the specific jumpsuit (it actually is only one out of a whole series in the fall collection, even though a so-called 'key piece' and incidentally the only overall in the 'trend color' khaki), which now actually is indeed reminiscent of the clothing of the Kurdish female fighters (especially those of the PKK). Interestingly, it has been not so much the opponents of the Kurdish fighters who complained about H&M, but much more (virtual) supporters, who raised the reproach of cultural exploitation of threatened minorities for business objectives. Contrariwise there also have been voices who suggested that it's actually great if H&M makes reference to the fight of the Kurdish women's units.

Anyway it's a tricky thing with customer wishes – surely in the house of H&M one is aware that it is completely impossible to please everyone, too. So it makes sense to withdraw into a pretended 'unpolitical' position and hide behind 'fashion trends', see point 2.

If H&M would like to serve any potential group of buyers (I hope, it is not solely a question of proportions!), considering thousands of Salafist fundamentalist ISIL supporters from Western countries (of whom also some hundreds of Germans are raging in Syria and Iraq) or the rising popularity for Christian fundamentalist, evangelical movements in recent years especially in the USA they would need to offer modishly edited ISIL balaclavas or printed shirts with homophobic 'highlights' out of Qur'an and Bible, too. Also the favourite phrase of all AfD voters (a relatively new German populist right-wing party) would be conceivable then: „It's still allowed to say that indeed, isn't it?“ (usually used in the context of fantasizing a 'political correct' opponent while making racist remarks or similar)... *urgh barf*

Then I definitely prefer soft pink fur combined with PKK/YPG jumpsuits!!! (^.^) So H&M definitely could 'wear' (defend) the 'style' even with a bit more proudness  – since the choice taken is not only chicer, with it they are standing on the right side of history, too! :-)

[sorry when I maybe turned a bit flippant at this point. But we never should lose the laughter – this is exactly what the ISIL idiots want, who are named on Twitter by many supporters of the Kurds for precisely these reasons only as #daeshbags (a wort creation out of 'daesh' (how ISIL is named in Arabic) and 'douchebags')...]

Eyes and ears in the whole of the world

It's nothing new that fashion designers (and this goes all the more for big chains) are interacting and inspired by developments ‚on the streets’. Or, in the words of H&M, react on customer wishes. It's interesting here though that from this interplay only one half is mentioned. Since what H&M is not talking about is the point that their fashion in turn also affects the society, influences and changes it (keyword: responsibility). It's a bit like with the chicken and the egg anyway: If H&M listens to its customers (what I like to believe) – who are the customers are listening to? And those who implement all that: the designers?

So where do the influences come from at all? From nature (for example forms, patterns, colours and materials) and culture (so also: clothing styles and fashion), from socio-cultural traditions and adaptations, from the real social proceedings and from media influences – from the news over film to pop. These are the same sources available to the designers. And these sources as well as the cultural products are (or should be) equally reflected by both customers and designers.
So what actually militates against the point that in the case of the khaki-green jumpsuit the H&M designers got some inspiration from the outfits of Kurdish female fighters? They indeed have to draw their ideas from somewhere.

Hans-Christian Riekhof (Hrsg.): Retail Business in Deutschland. Perspektiven, Strategien, Erfolgsmuster, 2.

Daily horror: The besieged town of Kobani (Kobane) in Northern Syria seen from the Turkish border nearby in the beginning of October 2014. Under the eyes of the global public, since Mid-September IS(IL) terrorists attack the (mainly, but not only, Kurdish) people of this town with heavy weapons and endless brutality.
The Kurdish People's Defence Units of the YPG, their women's brigades YPJ and the allied Turkish-Kurdish PKK fighters defend this town till today with unbelievable courage, but with a lack of modern weapons, food, medicine (and many other things missing) and with heavy losses and pain. Thousands and thousands of people had to flee, alone 200 000 refugees (!!!) are staying in Turkey now. In the meantime they achieved some support by airstrikes against the terrorists from the US-led Anti-IS-coalition and by Iraqi-Kurdish Peshmerga fighters and managed to push the IS(IL) scum back a bit out of town. In the bottom middle of the pic you can see a red flag from the Kurds waving on a building.

This is really ugly: T-Shirt from Zara reminiscent of KZ (concentration camp) clothing for Jews during the Nazi period in Germany (left); somebody on Twitter complaining about the sweatshirt from Urban Outfitters reminiscent of Kent State Massacre, where in 1970 four students have been shot and nine were seriously wounded when the National Guard opened fire to a peaceful demonstration against Vietnam War (right)
via Zara & Twitter

The role of the designers: Aimed provocation?

Even in times of fast fashion it takes a time until such items arrive from the idea to the design to the production and the transport up to the marketing in the shops. Even with a extremely short time-to-market cycle, in the fashion business one has to assume four weeks before delivery (see Hans-Christian Riekhof (ed.): Retail Business in Deutschland. Perspektiven, Strategien, Erfolgsmuster, 2nd edition 2008, p. 30) – in the meantime if required it maybe goes even faster, too. But I assume that the piece has been in the making already before in the middle of September ISIL started to attack the Northern Syrian ‚Kurdish town’ Kobani under the eyes of the world public – about two weeks ahead of the introduction of the collection. So there at least is no connection between the idea for the item in discussion with the latter incident. It's more likely that at least the drama of Kobani (possibly even the bloody offensive of the ISIL terrorists which generally started in June, first in Iraq and soon also in Syria) quasi got 'into the way' of the H&M-campaign.

Now a ‚scandal’ not necessarily has to harm a marketing campaign – even if the item itself is drawn back: „Any promotion is good promotion“ – but we had that before... In any case, the competitors Zara and Urban Outfitters already dumped much more tasteless ‚items’ on the market, of which nobody can tell me, it would have been ‚accidentally’: no designer of the world ‚accidentally’ drapes an appliquéd yellowJudenstern’ (the Nazi version, not the Star of David) on a striped shirt (the case of Zara) and no designer of the world ‚accidentally’ gets the idea to design of all things a shirt with the logo of Kent State University with bloodstains (there, in 1970 a massacre happened on students protesting against the Vietnam War – a well-known story) (the case of Urban Outfitters, who 'allow themselves' such ‚provocations’ about one time a year).

In opposition to that I find the H&M jumpsuit far less tasteless, and if we believe the official H&M line of ‚not wanting to hurt anybody’ to be true, it's quite likely about a not-intended ‚breaking in of the real(ity)’ (Jacques Lacan). In the last case the question arises, why in the light of the current incidents in Syria and Iraq H&M hasn't decided to draw back the piece (not the whole collection) from the market, like the competitors from Zara and Urban Outfitters did finally then. Though, as I said, H&M's item is not that tasteless and can be worn with proudness, too.

6.

Did they – or not?

But the reference to the times of production doesn't mean that the H&M designers not indeed draw inspiration from Kurdish female fighters – quite the opposite! This also makes sense when we take the apology from H&M seriously – and assume that the corporation has been rather surprised by the dramatic political developments. Since at a presumably pretty much earlier date of the making of the collection neither the PKK nor the YPG have been standing that much in the spotlight of the public – if any, the Iraqi-Kurdish Peshmerga, who at least called a domestic and international accepted autonomous region (Iraqi Kurdistan) in Iraq their own and since the attack of ISIL in the meantime are supported 'even' by the German army (Bundeswehr). The Turkish-Kurdish PKK has been in peace negotiations with the Turkey of president Erdogan (some also joke: Sultan Erdogan), a NATO partner, and the Syrian-Kurdish YPG mainly kept their nose out from the bloody civil war in Syria and preferred to invest their energy in building up a highly progressive social system in Northern Syrian region Rojava, in which also the since more than six weeks heavily embattled Kobani is located. In 'Free Rojava' not only Kurds, but people of many different ethnic groups, religions and skin colors were able to live together peacefully and with equal rights, great value has been set upon women's rights. So to draw some inspiration (or to 'steal' some aesthetical ideas) from the Kurdish fighters 'in those days' could have been assumed as not too much 'offensive' by the H&M designers – and in contrast to my fictitious and real examples above, indeed in principle nothing is wrong with a reference to the Kurdish freedom struggle! And especially when we take a closer look at the – in my eyes very beautiful – promotion video, there also is a lot of indication for that view, since beside the outfit itself it offers many links to the Kurdish question and related topics.

We will watch this together in the third part of my series of articles so stay tuned and follow the blog (on the right-hand side of this blog, relatively on top directly under the headline "Our lovely friends" you will find the button "Join this site"). It will continue soon, but research and translation make a lot of work.

We will learn a lot - and have a lot to do!

Von H&M nach Kobane

Video-Still H&M Fall Fashion 2014
all stills by STYLE! IT! TAKES! Berlin Blog

[Teil I einer neuen Artikel-Serie "Von H&M nach Kobane"]
[Part I of a new series of articles "From H&M to Kobani", English translation below]

IT! TAKES!

For a blog addressing fashion in a very widespread way it's almost unusual that the name H&M appears here for the first time. At least, many other fashion blogs mainly consist of outfit posts and look books, whose garments largely originate from the well-known chains and corporations like H&M (and labels belonging to them, like COS or Cheap Monday), Urban Outfitters, Zara or Mango, whereas in my STYLE! IT! TAKES! blog rather designs from independent, local and international fashion designers, but also vintage pieces are to be seen (worn by various persons, not only the blogger, that's me).

As you know, also in other ways my blog and project has dedicated itself fairly principally to other ideas, but today we once want to address the Swedish textile corporation as well and especially a controversial part of its fall collection, illustrated with custom film stills of the official video from the current promotional campaign, which, by the way, I like very much. And since the rule „Any press is good press“ takes effect anyway, I don't get around the possible accusation of (unpaid) camouflaged advertising for H&M anyhow. Unless… I plug 'en passant' for something else… Now, admittedly, that's my plan.
Unfortunately, at it, it is going to be also quite uncomfortable soon. That's how the world is that we want to change.

A beautiful model in a khaki-green dress is seen at the beginning of the H&M video, entering a pedestrian zone of what is said in the video to be New York City (is it really that beautiful?)

While (also) in my virtual surroundings of the social networks (let alone the very greatest part of fashion blogs) striking silence is reigning to somehow speak out about the Syrian Civil War raging since March of 2011 with 200.000 dead (!!!), about the permanent bloody conflicts in Iraq or the terror units of IS ('Islamic State') marauding globally, now just the Swedish fashion corporation H&M has recollected these acts of war also in the fashion world with a 'little scandal' over a khaki-green jumpsuit out of the current fall collection (we want to look at the question if intended or 'accidentally' further below). A 'scandal' which is linked to all this. Or, could be linked. Or: has been linked. Maybe also: should be linked. Anyway, in the last weeks not only me has anxiously looked at the brutal IS siege ongoing since middle of September of the Northern Syrian town of Kobani, which is defended against the terrorists of IS fiercely, sacrificially and courageously by the Kurdish People's Protection Units YPG and their women brigades of the YPJ. I see it positive when attention to this is also brought into the fashion world.

Eine Empörungswelle und eine Entschuldigung
A shitstorm and an apology

The 'Kurdish female fighters look' in the H&M video

Fashion without politics? No words about Kurdistan at H&M's German Facebook

It all began in the beginning of October with a 'shitstorm' against H&M on Facebook and Twitter where there was partly massive critics that the 'military look' of the mentioned olive-green jumpsuit, combined with a brown leather belt around the waist and with brown, laced ankle boots (presented by a H&M model and to be seen in the video a bit later), would be reminiscent of the combat dresses and the 'look' of Kurdish female fighters. This quite vaguely has been applied both to the female Kurds of the quasi-governmental Iraqi-Kurdish Peshmerga troops in Iraq (Kurdistan Regional Government ) as also to the Syrian-Kurdish women brigades of the People's Protection Units YPG currently fighting in Syria against the 'Islamic State' (ISIL) terrorists and being allied with the Turkish-Kurdish PKK guerilla in adjacent Turkey. Mistakenly making a synonym out of these different Kurdish groups also often happens in the political spheres, even though especially the Peshmerga on the one side and the YPG / PKK on the other side politically differ from each other very much. Anyway, the main accusation has been, H&M would capitalize the sorrow of the Kurds for their business objectives.
In the sequel, there have been reports in German Stern magazine and on Stylebook, Daily Mail, Huffington Post, Al Jazeera, Al Arabiya and many many other magazines. H&M reacted promptly – and apologized, but at the same time only alleged modish reasons and considerations about the case. In my opinion though, the critics' observation of the resemblance itself (independently of a judging or a judgment), is not to be denied.

H&M's global press officer, Ida Ståhlnacke, said in her statement:
“We are truly sorry if we have offended anyone with this piece, this was of course never our intention. At H&M we want to offer the latest within fashion and trends and we continuously listen to our customers’ requests. The last seasons we have seen an increasing demand on jumpsuits and therefore we currently offer a selection of jumpsuits in different colors and materials, such as denim blue and deep red. The jumpsuit in question is made in a light and comfortable material and is a part of a larger collection consisting of many garments in khaki green, which also is one of the trendiest colors this season. The opinions of our customers are very important to us and we will keep this feedback in mind for future collections.”
