Im letzten Teil habe ich Euch meine Gedanken zum Statement von H&M
zu der Kritik vorgestellt, sie hätten Look und Design ihres khaki-grünen
Jumpsuits von kurdischen Kämpferinnen 'geklaut' – einen Zusammenhang,
den H&M zu zerstreuen versuchte. Im Werbevideo selbst gibt es jedoch einige Hinweise, die den Zusammenhang eher erhärten als zerstreuen. Dabei will ich Euch auch ein paar Hintergrundinformationen
zu in die kurdische Thematik verwickelten Strömungen und 'Parteien'
liefern, die grob in drei Bereiche eingeteilt werden könnten: die
Vertreter der Politik der Vergangenheit, der Politik des Dazwischen und
der Politiken der Zukunft.
Wir beginnen mit der "Politik der Vergangenheit" und dabei wird's heute leider auch ziemlich eklig (sorry, wir müssen da – auch im übertragenen Sinne – durch!). Als Kontrast und kleine 'Entschädigung' möchte ich Euch vorab endlich den schönen H&M-Werbevideo vorführen, falls Ihr ihn nicht eh schon gesehen habt! :-)
H&M's fall fashion video
In the last part I have submitted to you my thoughts about the statement of H&M
to the criticism that they would have 'stolen' the look and design of their khaki-green jumpsuit from Kurdish female fighters - a relation H&M tried to allay. Nevertheless in the promotional video iself there are some hints rather corroborating the relationship than dispelling it. Along with that I want to provide to you also some background informations about movements and 'parties'
involved in the Kurdish theme, which could roughly be categorized into three sections: the representatives of the politics of the past, of the politics of the in-between and
of the politics of the future.
We start with the "politics of the past" and in the course of this unfortunately it will get quite nasty today, too (sorry, we need to go through that – also in a metaphorical sense!). As contrast and little 'compensation' I'd first like to show you finally the beautiful H&M promo video, if you haven't seen it already anyway! :-)
Islamistischer Terror & Rassismus
Recht
früh im Video sehen wir kurz einen vollbärtigen Mann am Straßenrand (siehe Photo oben), was an gängige Klischees von fundamentalistischen '
Islamisten' erinnern mag. Auch wenn es
natürlich vollkommener
Unsinn ist, zu glauben, diese wären an
Bärten oder überhaupt optisch zu erkennen, entspricht es einem in der
Gesellschaft stark verbreiteten '
Bild' (wie übrigens genauso die drei
Frauenfiguren jeweils bestimmte 'Frauentypen' verkörpern). Der Mann auf dem ersten Photo könnte sogar als
'terroristischer Schläfer' interpretiert werden, der nicht am
gesellschaftlichen Leben teilnimmt, sondern 'lauernd' abseits steht – in diesem
Fall von dem Treiben einer Fußgängerzone (vermutlich im
East Village oder
Greenwich Village in
Downtown Manhattan) in
New York (!),
der Stadt der grausamen, islamistischen
Anschläge von
9/11
(11. September 2001) auf das nahegelegene
World Trade Center, die nicht nur in den USA zum 'kollektiven
Gedächtnis' gehören. Beide genannten Stadtteile sind berühmt für ihre
LGBT-Szene, was zum homoerotisch-lesbischen ‚Subtext’ des Videos passt.
Allerdings ist unsere mit
Zauberkräften ausgestattete 'Amazone' im Video in der Lage, mit einem
einfachen Fingerschnippen sämtliche Passant*innen zum sofortigen
Stillstand zu bringen und quasi 'einzufrieren', was den Eindruck der
'Passivität' des Bärtigen auf dem Screenshot verstärken oder gar
auslösen mag. Später
im Video sehen wir einen zweiten Vollbärtigen (siehe Photo unten), der gesenkten Hauptes an
einem Geschäft mit leicht-bekleideten Schaufensterpuppen (oder Bilder
von diesen) vorbei läuft.
Beide Männer scheinen von den Protagonistinnen (unbewußt) wahrgenommen
zu werden, obwohl sie sich im Video sonst 'nur' für die anderen Frauen interessieren. Theoretisch könnte es sich aber auch um einen konspirativ
Verbündeten, einen Privatdetektiv, einen bärtigen Hipster oder einen nachdenklichen Passanten
handeln, der überlegt, was er seiner Frau oder seinem Mann und seinen Kindern gleich zum
Essen kocht
– oder an Liebeskummer leidet. ;-)
Wir sollten also vorsichtig sein mit unserer, oftmals von
rassistischen,
islamophoben oder
sexistischen Klischees überlagerten Wahrnehmung. So oder so glaube ich allerdings
nicht, dass die beiden gänzlich ohne Hintergedanken für das
H&M-Video gecastet und in dem beschriebenen Setting in Szene gesetzt wurden.
Islamist Terror & Racism
Relatively early in the video we briefly see a full bearded man on the side of the road (see photo on top),
what might be evocative of popular clichés of fundamentalistic '
Islamists'. Even though it is completely
nonsense of course to believe that these would be identifiable by beards or by any kind of view, it conforms a '
picture' widely spread in society (like, by the way, also the three female figures each embody specific 'women types'). The man on the first photo even could be interpreted as a 'terroristic sleeper', who doesn't take part in the life of society, but stands 'lurking' apart
– in this case from the goings-on of a pedestrian area (presumably in
East Village or
Greenwich Village in
Lower Manhattan) in
New York City (!), the city of the terrible Islamist attacks on the
World Trade Center nearby from
9/11, which belong to the 'collective memory' not only in the USA. Both neighborhoods mentioned are famous for their
LGBT scene, what suits with the homoerotic-lesbian ‚subtext’ of the video.
However our 'Amazon', equipped with magical powers, in the video has the ability to immediately stall all passersby with a simple snap and to quasi 'freeze' them, what might strengthen or even causing the impression of the
'passivity' of the bearded man on the screenshot. Later in the video we see a second full bearded man (see picture below) who passes, his head bowed, a shop with lightly clad mannequins (or pictures of these).
Both men seem to be (unconsciously) recognized by the female protagonists, though in the video they otherwise are interested in the other women 'only'. But theoretically it could also be about a conspiratorial ally, a private detective, a bearded hipster or a thoughtful passerby, who thinks about what he will cook for his partner and his children now
– or suffers lovesickness. ;-) So we should be careful with our perception, which is often overlayed by
racist,
islamophobic or
sexist clichés. One way or the other, I
don't believe however that the two of them have been cast and staged for the
H&M video in the described setting entirely without any ulterior motives.
Suspicious? The third H&M model with the discussed jumpsuit reminiscent of Kurdish female fighters in the middle and a bearded guy to the right...
Oder doch alles eine
Überinterpretation? Welche Auswirkungen auch auf die
Mode-Welt es haben kann, wenn religiöse Fanatiker*innen an Einfluss
gewinnen, mag jedenfalls folgendes Photo aus der von den IS (Islamischer Staat)-Terroristen
eroberten, zweitgrößten irakischen Stadt
Mossul verdeutlichen, die dort
sofort auch unliebsame Statuen und Grabstätten (!) zerstört haben. Und um es
ganz klar zu sagen: das Problem ist nicht
Verschleierung als selbstbestimmte, religiöse Praktik von Millionen Frauen auf der Welt,
sondern totalitärer Zwang in
konkreten Situationen (hier auf den vermutlich männlichen und muslimischen Ladenbesitzer). Den realen
IS-Terror – Vertreibung, Morde, Hinrichtungen, (Massen-)
Vergewaltigungen, Sklaven- und Frauenhandel – kann dieses Bild daher
nicht (oder höchstens sinnbildlich) wiedergeben. Was auf dem Photo sogar auch
irgendwie ästhetisch ansprechend aussehen mag, ist in Wirklichkeit der
blanke faschistische Terror. Und die
Ausführung kam ja auch von dem, offensichtlich sehr schicke Mode anbietenden Ladenbesitzer und es sind nur Schaufensterpuppen. Wären es
echte Frauen gewesen, der IS hätte sie
vergewaltigt oder als Sklavinnen
verkauft. :-(
Or is it all an
over-interpretation after all? Which consequences also to the fashion world it can have when religious zealots gain influence, anyhow might be clarifed by the following photo from the second largest Iraqi city
Mosul which has been conquered by the ISIL terrorists, who also immediately destroyed unwelcome statuaries and graves (!) there. And to say it very clearly: the problem is not
veiling as a self-paced, religious practice of millions of women in the world,
but totalitarian enforcement in
concrete situations (in this case on the presumably male Muslim shop owner). Hence this picture can
not (or, no more than allegorical) mirror the real
ISIL terror – displacements, homicides, executions, (mass)
rapes, slave trade and women trafficking... What might appear on the photo even also
somehow aesthetically appealing, is in reality sheer fascist terror. And the
accomplishment of course has been made by the shop owner (apparently offering very chic fashion) and it are only shop-window mannequins. If it would have been
real women, ISIL would have
raped them or
sold them as slaves. :-(

While the peoples of the Middle East are afflicted with the ISIL terror every single day,
recently of all things German neo-Nazis and
right-wing hooligans have presented themselves as 'spearheads' of the fight against
'Salafists'. Wanting to substitute the terroristic ISIL crap with racist
Nazi crap is so absurd that I want to make no further words about it. Just take a look at them - their mugs are so ugly that they better should be hidden under an ISIL balaclava and are buried together with them...
(I had to change the photo above into black & white mode in order to keep this beautiful blog free of Germany flags (^.^)...)
Conservative German president Gauck recently warned of the left-wing (!) party (Die Linke) in Germany. This cartoon makes fun of it, saying to him that the 'Honest Fritz' (in the middle) has some other problems:

Zur Politik der Vergangenheit gehören – ohne Bezug zum H&M Video – auch die verlogene Politik der 'westlichen' Länder wie Deutschland und den USA und die ausgesprochen widerliche Rolle, die ihre Partner und Verbündeten Türkei, Katar und Saudi-Arabien einnehmen (siehe IS Info-Kasten oben). Die letzteren beiden zeichnen sich durch politische Systeme aus, die denen vom IS anvisierten und praktizierten kaum nachstehen: Menschen- und Frauenrechte werden in diesen diktatorischen absoluten Monarchien mit Füßen getreten. Trotzdem werden sie vom Westen (u. a. den USA, aber auch von Deutschland, das heißt, genehmigt von SPD-Minister Sigmar Gabriel) immer wieder mit schweren Waffen beliefert. Gleiches gilt für die Türkei, die seit Jahrzehnten einen 'schmutzigen Krieg' gegen die kurdische Bevölkerung führt, den IS innerhalb der Türkei gewähren lässt und sich (auch mit deutschen Panzern ausgerüstet) das Drama von Kobane von der nahen Grenze aus tatenlos anschaut, während dort ausharrende Zivilist*innen und Journalist*innen immer wieder mit Tränengas angegriffen werden.
Der kurdische Twitterer #Cahit Storm, der sich dort wochenlang aufhielt, drückte es in dem ihm eigenen sarkastischen Humor im Oktober so aus:
Ne Menge Fragen zur türkischen Armee: sie genießen seit 3 Wochen ein Sonnenbad und trinken Mojitos. Und zweimal am Tag greifen sie uns an. #Kobane

To the politics of the past also belong – without a relation to the H&M video
– the phony politics of the 'Western' countries like
Germany and the
USA and the downright disgusting role their partners and allies
Turkey,
Qatar and
Saudi Arabia are playing (see ISIL info box above).
The last two are characterized by political systems not that
different from those targeted and practiced by ISIL: human rights and women's rights are trampled on in these dictatorial absolute monarchies. Nevertheless, again and again they are supplied with heavy weapons by the West (e. g. from the USA, but also from Germany, which means authorised by social democratic SPD minister
Sigmar Gabriel). Same goes for
Turkey,
which carries on a 'dirty war' against the Kurdish population since decades, lets ISIL do in Turkey what it likes and (equipped also with German tanks) stands on the sidelines of the drama of Kobani on the border nearby, while civilians and journalists staying out there frequently are attacked with tear gas.

Zu den Widersprüchlichkeiten, aber auch Hoffnungsschimmern der aktuellen Situation gehört, dass unter dem wachsenden Druck der Weltöffentlichkeit die
Türkei nach wochenlangem Zögern endlich irakische
Peschmerga-Kurd*innen und aufständische syrische
FSA-Einheiten zur Unterstützung der Kurd*innen in Kobane über ihr Territorium reisen lassen hat. Außerdem hat die Türkei bis zu 300.000 (vor allem kurdischen) Flüchtlingen aus Syrien Aufnahme gewährt – etwas, wovon sich
Deutschland eine Scheibe abschneiden könnte. Die beste Nachricht aber ist, dass die wackeren Verteidiger*innen von
Kobane seit mittlerweile 41 Tagen den Angriffen der
IS #daeshbags Stand halten und angefangen haben, sie aus der belagerten Stadt zu verjagen! :-)
One of the inconsistencies but also dawns of hope of the current situation is that under increasing pressure of the world public Turkey – after procrastinating it for weeks – finally has allowed Iraqi Peshmerga-Kurds and insurgent Syrian FSA units
to travel through its territory to support the Kurds in Kobani. Furthermore Turkey has granted asylum for up to 300.000 (mainly Kurdish) refugees from Syria – something of which Germany could take a leaf out of this book. But the best news is that the brave defenders of Kobani repel the attacks of the ISIL #daeshbags since in the meantime 41 days and have started to drum them out of their besieged town! :-)
Von den guten Nachrichten abgesehen ist's diesmal wirklich etwas gruselig geworden. Da es sich hier um einen
optimistischen Blog handelt, wird es zusehends besser. :-) Im nächsten Teil werden wir uns – weiter entlang des
H&M Videos – den
Politiken des Dazwischen widmen, bevor wir dann schließlich und endlich bei den
Politiken der Zukunft angelangen. Ok., einmal Lachen noch. Eine scherzhafte Bitte an
Barack Obama: Loche wenigstens
einmal einen Plan ein... ;-)
Nur ob's angesichts der mehr als fragwürdigen Verbündeten aus den 'Golfstaaten' ne gute Idee ist, es
ausgerechnet mit
Golf zu versuchen...? (^.^)
Apart from the good news, this time it really has turned a bit creepy. Since it is about an
optimistic blog here, it will increasingly get better. :-) Further along the
H&M video, in the next part we will address the
politics of the in-between, before when all is said and done we arrive at the
politics of the future then. Ok., one more laughter.
