Das Letzte Massaker der Dschihadisten

~ dedicated to all the victims and their mourning surviving dependants ~

In endloser Trauer um die Ermordeten. RIP ihr alle.

Opfer des Daesh (IS) - Massakers in Kobanê / Rojava am 25. Juni 2015
Victims of the Daesh (ISIL) massacre in Kobanê / Rojava on 25th of June 2015

Genug!

#ISIS bastards deliberately targeted civilians in #Kobane - staggering death toll.

The Last Massacre of the Jihadists

Actually, I have been concerned with far more pleasant and positive thoughts (and also posts) when I came back overwhelmed with joy from the most beautiful wedding of my life that far and an endless and endlessly beautiful Berlin non-stop party and heard about these news:

On the 25th of June 2015, after a months-long series of defeats against the brave Kurdish self defense units in Rojava (Northern-Syria), in a barbaric vendetta the islamistic Daesh terrorists (ISIL) again invaded the town of Kobanî (already liberated since January) with heavy weapons and exploding suicide vehicles, stormed a hospital and marauding through the streets and houses in their massacre randomly murdered more than 230 people! The jihadists invaded from different sides into the town, among others also –  exceptionally shaved and disguised (!) in uniforms of the Kurdish YPG and the Syrian rebels FSA by foot as well as with in total at least two suicide bomb vehicles over the adjacent Turkish border, which mostly is closed for humanitarian aid supplies into the Kurdish town, but constantly wide open in both directions for the islamistic terrorists. So behind the attack stands not only Daesh (ISIL), but also NATO partner Turkey and its disgusting president Erdogan sympathizing with the jihihadists. Incidentally also deployed at the border is the German 'Bundeswehr' which surely is bored with their official task (protection of Turkey against attacks from Syria), but beside this is always at service for its Turkish NATO friend while Obama's USA commendably helps the Kurds.

As is well known, on the same day also in Tunisia (at least 39 Western vacationers have been shot at the beach of Sousse!), Kuwait (in Kuwait City during the traditional Friday prayers at least 25 believers in a Shiite mosque have been killed!) and France (in Lyon the 54-year-old Hervé C. has been beheaded by an IS jihadist!) far more than 60 Muslim and non-Muslim civilians have been murdered by Daesh, which has been widely reported in the international media, while the biggest massacre, the one in Kobanî, largely has been swept under the carpet. I'm speechless and want to keep it that way today. Since November I have provided all required knowledge about these topics for you in this blog. However, the disgusting Yes-but-politics of the EU and Germany now finally has to come to an end, this goes in Berlin especially for the unbelievable Social Democrats of the SPD and its friends from the Conservative Party CDU who both still keep their German army 'Bundeswehr' deployed in Turkey, while out from exactly this Turkey again and again such brutish jihadist attacks at the self-governed Kurdish region Rojava in Northern-Syria are started. Enough!

Kurdish women already said it in the beginning of this year at the #CharlieHebdo funeral march in Paris:

The barbarity that killed in Paris also kills in Kobanî.

Like we all know, it's never good to not listen to (our) mothers... :-(

... just a few memories...

Just take a look into the faces of these lovely people of Kobanî who had to die for the misguided politics of the EU, Germany, Turkey and Russia:

Rifat Horoz (fighter name Karker Kobanê ("Worker of Kobanî")) from Albania / Balkans left his flat for refugees from Rojava, came himself to the border and then took part for months with the civilian guards, trying to prevent attacks by IS fascists from Turkey. His YPG unit had been concerned with the clearance of mines and not exploded bombs in Kobanî and removed more than 800 explosive devices, 200 grenades and four tons of landmines. EU politics didn't even give a toss about his efforts. Rifat survived everything, only not this massacre.

Let's keep his flowers in our hearts.

It is obvious what the Daesh barbarians are targeting at: at the great efforts to restore a civilian life in Kobanî and the anyway difficult reconstruction endeavours of the town, totally destroyed by themselves (Daesh) in the winter during their months-long siege. Now, the people of Kobanî beside many other things also urgently need medical aid for the more than 500 (!) injured survivors.

It! Takes!

The shortest way to Tell Abyad

Since my report "With Ponytails against Terrorists" from March 2015 about the situation in Northern Syria, the alliance fighting in that region against the jihadist ISIL (Daesh) gang of killers has made such striking advances that it's time for a continuation.* So here is a summary in four chapters about the generally positive course of the war in the Cantons of Kobanî and Cizîrê (which make up together with the Canton of Afrin (Kurdish: Efrîn) the self-governed Kurdish region of Rojava) from January to June this year by means of like always carefully selected maps and photos.

* By the way, my deliberately delayed coverage has advantages. Not everything which often is already on the next day overtaken by events (perhaps even a canard in need of correction) needs to be posted in this blog. For daily updates there is Twitter, where at my Style! It! Takes! account "Magenta Netzwerk" (Twitter@magentanetzwerk) beside beautiful fashion & beauty photos you are regularly provided with cultural & political news and current tweets about the situation in Syria, Iraq and Turkey, too. Instead here I provide the a bit more lasting service of a continuous summary of the most important incidents.

Map 1: Situation in the city of Kobanî (18th of January 2015)

"The eagle on Qada Azadî (Freedom Square) is still standing,
the destruction around the square is close to complete."
Photo & English quote by free journalist Fréderike Geerdink

Let's think back in which hopeless appearing situation we still had been in January. The Kurdish Canton of Kobanî had been completely overrun by the jihadist terrorists of the 'Islamic State' (Daesh), the City of Kobanî set up a last, desperate refuge of resistance just like the 'Gallic Village' at Asterix and Obelix, only with the difference that the town lay in ruins (and largely still is) and further almost the half of it had been controlled already by the Daesh gang of killers. While hundreds of thousands of people (mainly, but not only Kurds) already had to leave the country as refugees, a fierce street fight between the jihadists and the determined remaining Kurdish defenders of the city raged for every street, every building, every house. Those defenders were the Kurdish People's Defense Units YPG and the Women's Defense Units YPJ (lead photo) who at it solely have been supported by the guerilla HPG of the Turkish-Kurdish Workers Party PKK and relatively small neighboring state units of the Iraqi-Kurdish Peshmerga of which only the latter had been equipped with modern weapons at least.

Beside that, everybody already had given up Kobanî: the media, the West, Kurd-hating Turkish president Erdogan anyway, even the USA who in their 'war against terror' had only chosen to intervene on the side of the Kurds (with air strikes against Daesh positions) due to the increasing moral pressure by the global public, something which — as we will see had been a good decision. On 26th of January 2015 the Kurdish forces prevailed, to the surprise of the world public the City of Kobanî was liberated (see my post: "Liberation & Reconstruction of the City of Kobanî" from February 2015). As I already had 'suggested' in November 2014 in this blog, indeed Kobanî finally turned to be the 'Stalingrad' of the IS terrorists!

In both cases, we must not forget the untold suffering of the finally victorious people and defenders of the city which came along. A suffering which I as an outsider don't arrogate to be able to describe it even approximately and whose description also wouldn't get along without bloody and bitter pictures which I try to avoid in this blog as you know (when you see the damages on the buildings you might imagine the rest).

Map 2: The recapture of the rural surroundings of Kobanî advances rapidly (31st of January 2015)

But after that, everything proceeded quite rapidly: on 8th of February, the Kurds — along with now allied units of the FSA (Free Syrian Army, fighting against Assad's regime) already reached the eastern banks of Euphrates for the first time, which they brought under their control until mid-March from the Syrian-Turkish border down to the Qara Qawzaq bridge (by now partly destroyed), over which the jihadists withdrew then:

For the moment, it was not possible to keep up this astonishing tempo then, everything proceeded much more slowly — and unfortunately sometimes even backwards. An example are the villages Sal and Jil (see center of map 3), which had been liberated already by the end of February, but due to counterattacks by Daesh in March 'changed hands' then again and again and could have been finally retaken by the Kurds not until April (now hopefully permanently).

Beides wollte man verständlicherweise vermeiden.

Another drama had been the week-long fight for the Lafarge Cement Plant, a huge, isolated industrial complex, important for the infrastructure of the Canton. Daesh terrorists had entrenched themselves there, but were encircled since 21st of February by Kurdish units for several weeks (see the red patch in green-colored territory on the bottom right of > map 3 above), so it already had been speculated on Twitter if the #daeshbags there subsist in the meantime eating stone and cement like termites. ;-) Nevertheless, an attack of the unclear industrial complex, built out to a fortress by Daesh, seemed to be hazardous. Also bombardments through US-air strikes as most simple solution happened only sporadically and reluctantly in order to not completely destroy the important area. Understandably one wanted to avoid both. So it eventually happened that in the course of a counterattack Daesh managed to burst the Kurdish encirclement and supply or swap the entrenched terrorists before the Kurdish circumvallation was closed again. After already on the 17th of March prematurely a liberation had been reported, only on the 12th of April the alliance of YPG/YPJ and FSA named "Burkān al-Furāt" (in English: Euphrates Volcano or Vulcano of Euphrates) finally succeeded to take over the plant then. This example shows once again (there are many similar cases, mostly related to infrastructural buildings like cement plants, huge grain silos, important streets and bridges) that the war is fought fiercely for every inch of ground, but also that the Kurds don't embark on traps set by Daesh and in opposite to the homicidal jihadists all in all conduct a very sober, focused warfare. When finally successful, after a nearly two-month-long drama, a big portion of pathos like in the following linked YPG video should be allowed then, too, ...

Abzug der Peschmerga
Departure of the Peshmerga

A sad setback occurred at the end of April, since due to conditions Turkey had set for a permission, the Iraqi-Kurdish Peshmerga units who went to the rescue of the Kobanî Kurds in the winter had to leave Rojava again along with their (distinctly more modern) weapons the same way as they had come: through Turkey. Despite the good collaboration between the Syrian and Iraqi Kurds, the loyalty to Turkey finally won after all (the government of Iraqi Kurdistan traditionally seeks a good relationship to Turkey, which 'in turn' sees a Syrian-Kurdish self-government right on its 'doorstep' as a thorn in its flesh!), something which (partly on the quiet) indeed caused comprehensible discontent not only in Rojava, too:

Ausschnitte aus der Diskussion zum Tweet des Journalisten Jack Shahine (Twitter, 28. April 2015)
Outtakes from the discussion about the tweet of journalist Jack Shahine (Twitter, 28th of April 2015)

But Jack also reported, that "#Peshmerga ready to be back when it's necessary" and that "Kobani ppl gathered honoring their brothers as they welcomed them" (Twitter @jackshahine, 28 April 2015). Fortunately apart from the important symbolic and diplomatic meaning of a cooperation between the Syrian and Iraqi Kurds for outside observers the departure of the Iraqi-Kurdish Peshmerga units however hadn't perceptible negative impacts on the advances of the Kurdish units in Rojava. That they have been there for the people of Kobanî when they were urgently needed will remain unforgotten.

Brennende Felder, verbrannte Erde
Burning fields, scorched earth

While in Kobanî itself the civil life returned slowly and with great efforts (thereto see my post "The Return of Civil Life in Kobanî" from May 2015), in the rural regions further terrible incidents occurred. So, on their creeping retreat, in the South the Daesh terrorists set crop fields and tree plantations on fire, a policy of 'scorched earth'.

Many Kurds and voluntary supporters from all over the world died in the fierce battles, again and again also civilians died in the towns, villages and fields through mines and exploding blind shells, after the international community (Germany-dominated EU, UNO etc.) — despite repeated calls for help with the bomb disposal (also in this blog) had failed to help out with specialists and modern technics. A shame.

Optimistischer Sommeranfang
Optimistic beginning of summer

But at the end of this cumbersome spring and heavy battlesunfortunately often also involving heavy losses there was a stabilization of the mainly already until mid-March liberated areas (see map 3) and a further expansion of the liberated territory in the South and East of the Canton of Kobanî:

Many #TwitterKurds (me too) had assumed that the next big goal would be the jihadist stronghold Sarrin at Euphrates (see map 4), on which there had been US-American air strikes coordinated with the YPG/YPJ already since the end of February and which is under permanent Kurdish siege since mid-March, but is defended by Daesh so doggedly (among other things with permanent river crossings with supply and ordnance starting from the western side of Euphrates) that it couldn't be captured right now. But, to the surprise of all of us, things turned out different — and even much better!

In the end, all terror by the jihadists had been of no use: it couldn't stop the advance of the Kurds. Those who only (often frustrated) gazed at the maps of the meanwhile viscous progress in the Canton of Kobanî could easily overlook that simultaneously units of YPG & YPJ hit the road in record pace from eastern Cizîrê (the biggest Canton of Rojava, at the North adjacent to Turkey, (south)east at the border to Iraqi Kurdistan) in the direction of Kobanî. In the Canton of Cizîrê the Kurds always had major territories and also lost less terrain to the Daesh terrorists. Already in the end of February then also the Kurdish towns Tal Hamis & Tal Brak had been wrested and liberated from the murderous claws of Daesh there (see "With Ponytails against Terrorists"). And it had been far from over. At the end of May, parts of the huge capital city of the Governate, Al-Hasakah (Kurdish: Hesîçe), could be liberated (fully liberated from Daesh on 1st of August 2015!), at the same time other YPG/YPJ units moved forward on and on to the west in the direction of Kobanî... As you see, we need even bigger map sections of Rojava now:

Juni 2015).

Map 5 (Rojava on the 3rd of June 2015):
The areas west of the line Serekaniye - Tel Tamir - Hasakah (right half of the map) colored in a bit darker shade of brown — are the Kurdish territorial gains from the 6th of May till the 3rd of June 2015, an area about as big as the whole areas liberated in the Canton of Kobanî since January 2015 (beige-colored area on the top left of the map). Exactly in between we can see the at that time still ISIL/Daesh-held (grey-colored areas) bigger towns Suluk (liberated on the 13th / 14th of June 2015), Tell Abyad at the border to Turkey (liberated on the 15th/16th of June 2015) and Ayn Issa in the South (liberated on the 23rd of June 2015).

So the fastest way to the strategically central Turkish-Syrian border city Tell Abyad (Arab name; Kurdish: Girê Spî) much too long held by the #daeshbags didn't lead through the few (but obviously hard to break) separating kilometers on the 'eastern front' of Kobanî (see map 4 from 4th of June 2015), but through the just shortly before more than 100 kilometers of "Daeshistan" (apposite term by French Twitter Kurd Cahit Storm for the caliphate of mass murderers) which separated the Cizîrê Kurds from the city. In a classical pincer movement by the now for the first time united defense units of the two of the Kurdish Cantons (YPG and women of the YPJ from Kobanî and Cizîrê), the city could be liberated then on the 15th of June 2015 to the surprise of everybody:

Juni 2015 befreit. Die IS-Terroristen fliehen in die Türkei!

Map 6: The pincers click: the YPG/YPJ units coming from the West and the East are uniting south of Tell Abyad and cut the supply routes of Daesh, Tell Abyad is attacked from the East and liberated on the 15th of June 2015. The ISIL terrorists flee into Turkey!

The Tell Abyad / Girê Spî offensive which had been started on the 6th of May 2015 finally succeeded to establish the both militarily as well as humanitarian (in this case almost synonymous) urgently needed corridor between Kobanî and Cizîrê, which in the direction of Turkey the dictatorial ruling president Erdogan is unwilling to accept there (aid convoys arriving from all over the world often have to wait for days or are not allowed to cross the Turkish border at all) and which also the international community had been incapable to create.
So with one offensive three goals could be achieved:

  • the liberation of the civilians in Tell Abyad suffering the Daesh terror,
  • cutting off a central connection of ISIL's long trade, smuggling and supply routes from Iraq over Raqqa to Turkey (and back again!) and
  • the creation of a connection between two of the three Kurdish Cantons in Rojava.

(Juni 2015)

A silver lining & black clouds on the horizon of bordering country Turkey
The parliamentary elections in Turkey and a warning
(June 2015)

June turned out to an initially highly encouraging breakthrough for the Kurdish movement for some other reason, too: the (not only) Kurdish, secular, left-wing, feminist and fortunately also advocating for the rights of other ethnic minorities and the growing LGBTQ community HDP party (Peoples' Democratic Party; Turkish: Halkların Demokratik Partisi, Kurdish: Partiya Demokratîk a Gelan), running for the first time at the parliamentary elections in Turkey on 7th of June 2015, easily could pass the undemocratic 10% threshold and move into the parliament with sensational 13 % and with this take away the absolute majority of the governing AKP party of president Erdogan, which he would have needed for his planned even more undemocratic amendment of the constitution (to a presidential system).

But it had been foreseeable that these two further sensational successes after the liberation of Kobanî would not fit the concept of one NATO member and western ally at all: the Turkey of president Erdogan who has been accused since a long time to secretly cooperate with Daesh. Tell Abyad served ISIL both "as a base of operations" as well as a "logistic connection" to Turkey (translated quotes by the deputy 'foreign minister' of Kobanî, Idriss Nassan), since over this border crossing people (for example, injured ISIL fighters let groom themselves in Turkish hospitals to the disgust of the nurses working there and returned to their 'jihad' then, also replenishment of international jihadists could pass the border again and again), weapons and explosives (to Syria), oil (into Turkey) and other things have been and could be transferred. Already in the end of May just this Idriss Nassan issued the warning:

"Turkey precisely doesn't want to give up this border crossing, since therewith the connection to the terrorists would be cut off, too, and they don't want that by any means.“
(translated; you can check the interview worth reading here (in German):

Unfortunately, this had been a sad true warning.

Editorial note by the author:
Also in order to limit the meanwhile indeed quite large number of my reports about Rojava in this (arts & urban life, fashion & beauty!!!) blog a bit, originally I wanted to wait with my summary of events until the foreseeable Liberation of Sarrin* which then took place not until the 27th of July 2015 (according to that, this article would have been published in August then).

* With the help of this article you now know where Sarrin is located and how important this next liberation is. Even me (judging from my Twitter: especially me ^.^) has yearningly waited for it anxiously gazing at the ugly little (though dangerous) red dot on Chuck Pfarrer's war maps for nearly half a year — though it had been clear that sooner or later Daesh would loose it, too.

But unfortunately after the liberation of Tell Abyad due to the totally crazy reaction both of Daesh (concerning this, see my endlessly sad next post, published in late June) as well as from the German NATO partner Turkey under president Erdogan a completely new, terrible development occured (see #TurkeysWarOnKurds from early January 2016), which eventually caused me to cut the depiction of the hitherto all in all encouraging developments in Rojava / Northern Syria of the first half of the year 2015 here for now and to seek for everything following another (both political and journalistic) form, maybe also another tone. That is why I place this article retroactively here in the late June (whose state it reflects) and make a summer pause in July & August to clear my mind for new attempts and initiatives.

Stay tuned, I do the same!

all war cartographers who do useful work, especially to Chuck Pfarrer & Team (USA; strikingly reliable based on informations by Jack Shahine, 'Iron Eye' and the official YPG/YPJ statements) whose maps had been the most useful and lucid (guess not only for me) during that period. ♥

Regarding the local photos and informations (especially from the Canton of Kobanê), wonderful Jack Shahine surely had been (and is!) the most reliable and authentic source without whom not one single 'on-site' article about the war against Daesh in Rojava / Syria could have been published in this blog. ♥

Thanx also to Cahida Dêrsim, Fréderike Geerdink, Cahit Storm, Mark Monmonier and the Twitter accounts of @mustefaebdi, @mutludc, @BosnjoBoy, @middleeast_24, @sylezjusz, @zaidbenjamin and everybody else who (indirectly) contributed to this article. ♥

Danke Euch allen - Thanx to all of you!
Nieder mit dem Pseudo-Kalifat - Down with the pseudo-caliphate!
Zerschlagt Daesh - Smash Daesh!
Wir alle wollen Sommer & Frieden - We all want summer & peace!

Was Ihr tun könnt:

What you can do:

Leave your car at home if possible, oil always comes along with blood!
(principally it's even possible that your fuel originates from Daesh)

As long as Erdogan stays in power: No touristic holidays in Turkey!

German armed forces 'Bundeswehr' out of (ISIL/Daesh supporting) Turkey!

Lift the ban of the PKK (sister organisation of the YPG / YPJ)!

Refugees welcome!
