POPSIMONOVA trägt DEGENEROTIKA

Das Berliner Avantgarde Fashion Label DEGENEROTIKA von Thea Adora Bauer und Jasa Gladez ist mit seinem Hang zur eher düsteren Seite sicherlich der perfekte modische Ausstatter für die großartige kroatische Electro-Diva POPSIMONOVA. Beide kommen für die zweite STYLE! IT! TAKES! Nacht am 18. Januar 2013 im Grünen Salon für eine ganz besondere Show zusammen. Herzlichen Dank auch an Shąvi Ląvi für diese wunderschönen Photos, die bereits letztes Jahr bei einer gemeinsamen Session in Berlin entstanden sind. ♥

Stylish records by POPSIMONOVA & ZARKOFF

Popsimonova & Zarkoff

Stil ist ja bekanntlich nicht nur eine Frage der Bekleidung. Manche Leute veröffentlichen auch wunderbar schöne und intelligente Plattenreleases.
Ein besonders gelungenes Beispiel ist die in einem etwa B5-großen Versandumschlag überbrachte, mit einer Stacheldraht-Banderole beklebte und dezent gestempelte ("Lato apribile per l'ispezione postale", italienisch, bedeutet ungefähr sowas wie "für die postalische Begutachtung seitlich öffnen") Mini-CD Falling Down Tonight / Voluntary Work Camp von POPSIMONOVA & ZARKOFF aus Zagreb (Kroatien).

 

Die unglaubliche Veröffentlichung auf dem 0.5 Label (erschienen im Mai 2012) ist auf 50 Stück limitiert und auf der Rückseite mit Edding nummeriert...




Die Öffnung des guten Stücks ist dann wohl Stil, Art und Laune der glücklichen Empfänger*innen überlassen. Popsimonova schlug auf Nachfrage ein entschlossenes Aufreißen vor (*crash*)... ich habe die kleine 'Briefbombe' lieber vorsichtig und respektvoll mit einem altmodischen Brieföffner seitlich in sauberem Schnitt 'entschärft'...

Mein absolutes Popsimonova-Lieblingslied ist die 'A-Seite' der in dem magischen Umschlag enthaltenen Mini-CD, Falling Down Tonight. Das von Popsimonova geschriebene, eingespielte und gesungene, technoide und extrem tanzbare Stück erinnert ein wenig an Anne Clark (nur noch viel besser, was eine Leistung ist...) – und ist wunderschön. Dazu Popsimonova's großartige Stimme, von der ich schon seit Jahren einfach nicht genug bekommen kann... Ihr könnt es Euch in meinem Blog-Post zu Popsimonovas Auftritt bei Style! It! Takes! in Berlin und ihrer Arbeit als Mode-Designerin (auf dem Photo oben ist eines ihrer genialen Kostüme zu sehen) etwas weiter unten anhören ...

Neben der winzigen CD findet sich im Inneren des Umschlages ein Sammelsurium von – wiederum je nach Geschmack und Lebensart – Gimmicks, Gebrauchsgegenständen, Sammelstücken... oder aber (ganz im Sinne von Walter Benjamins 'Engel der Geschichte') politisch-gesellschaftskritischen Fundstücken als Bausteine für eine kritische und dialogische Auseinandersetzung mit Geschichte in Zusammenhang mit unserer bewegten Gegenwart...

Umschlagfüllend ein kleines, auf starkem Papier gedrucktes und zusammengeklapptes Poster nach dem berühmten "We Can Do It!"-Motiv, das der US-amerikanische Graphiker J. Howard Miller (1918 – 2004) während dem II. Weltkrieg für das Westinghouse War Production Co-Ordinating Committee schuf. Als Inspiration wurde immer wieder ein Photo der Metall-Presserin Geraldine Hoff Doyle (1924 – 2010) bei der American Broach & Machine Co. vermutet:

Während Millers Motiv im II. Weltkrieg sehr unbekannt war, weil es nur für eine kurze Zeit (im Februar 1943) und auch nur firmenintern (Westinghouse Electric) zu sehen war, wurde es eigentlich erst in den 1980er Jahren – angeeignet und zweckentfremdet vor allem für feministische Botschaften – verbreitet und berühmt. Der ursprünglichen Intention der Auftraggeber von Westinghouse, Arbeiter*innen-Unruhen zu verhindern und die Kontrolle und Arbeitsmoral ihrer Mitarbeiter*innen zu erhöhen, standen die Botschaften der Frauenbewegung diametral entgegen:

The "We" was understood to mean "We Women", uniting all women in a sisterhood fighting against gender inequality. This was very different from the poster's 1943 use to control employees and to discourage labor unrest. (from engl. Wikipedia: We Can Do It!)

Durch immer neue Adaptionen in Politik, Medien und Werbung und zahllose Parodien ist das Motiv heute weltbekannt. Doch die ursprünglich (weibliche) Arbeitsdisziplin an der US-amerikanischen 'Heimatfront' für die Kriegsproduktion gegen die Nazis einfordernde Durchhalteparole "We Can Do It!" ist heute als Botschaft nicht mehr zu gebrauchen, wie auch ihre Verwendung von Hillary Clinton bis zu Sarah Palin im US-Wahlkampf 2008 deutlich macht...

Schon die damals erst 17jährige Fabrikarbeiterin des Metallpresswerks in der Nähe von Ann Arbor (Michigan) Geraldine Hoff Doyle – die das Plakat übrigens erst 1984 zum ersten Mal in einem Zeitungsartikel zu Gesicht bekam und vorher nichts von dessen Existenz wußte – hat sich übrigens nicht von der Propaganda für mehr Arbeitsmoral kirre machen lassen:

She quit after only two weeks upon finding out that a women had badly injured her hand doing the same job. Doyle loved to play the cello and was worried that the job might cripple her hands. (http://www.famouspictures.org/mag/index.php?title=We_Can_Do_It!)

Und so erhält die Arbeiterin in der kroatischen Version statt des Westinghouse-Mitarbeiter-Abzeichens einen ablehnenden "Piss off"-Button und aus der Kriegsprogaganda wird sehr zeitgemäß eine verweigernde Streikerklärung: "We Won't Do It!"...

Darunter die belustigende Ankündigung der beigefügten CD-Single:
"Ridiculous song the Youth Brigade sings in unison"...


  

Wie eine Grußbotschaft aus einer anderen Zeit wirkt eine auf rauhem Papier speziell für diese Veröffentlichung gedruckte Postkarte mit einem Photo von Bauarbeitern in den USA Ende des 19. Jahrhunderts...

Beide Beilagen stehen in einem Bezug zum zweiten Stück der Mini-CD, einem Gemeinschaftswerk von Popsimonova & Zarkoff. Voluntary Work Camp thematisiert nostalgische Erinnerungen an die 'sozialistischen' Jugend- und Ferienlager im ehemaligen Jugoslawien, in denen gemeinsam an Einrichtungen der Infrastruktur wie Straßen oder Eisenbahnen gebaut, aber auch 'lächerliche Lieder' ("Ridiculous songs the Youth Brigade sings in unison") gesungen wurden... Zarkoff äußerte in einem Gespräch in den Tagen nach seinem Auftritt bei Style! It! Takes! in Berlin sein Bedauern, dass es solche zivilen und kollektiven Arbeiten im heutigen Kroatien nicht mehr gäbe und viele Jugendliche heute stattdessen zum Militär gingen und auch an Kriegseinsätzen im Ausland beteiligt seien.

... und so werden wir schließlich mit der etwas wackeligen, kleinen und faltbaren CD-Hülle (?) in Form eines beidseitig mit Piktogrammen des gesellschaftskritischen, konstruktivistischen Künstlers und Grafikers, Résistance-Kämpfers, Kapitalismus- und Kriegsgegners Gerd Arntz gestalteten Schachbretts daran erinnert, dass wir alle Teil des globalen kapitalistischen Schachspiels sind... und natürlich, dass wir in der Lage sind, das Spiel nach eigenen Regeln selbst zu spielen und vom vorgegebenen Brett zu springen...

Gerd Arntz erklärte 1980 in einem Interview, er habe 'Lehrbilder' machen wollen, die die nächsten Aufgaben anzeigten: „Kasernenbesetzung, Fabrikbesetzung und solche Dinge.“

Für mich ist diese Botschaft aus Kroatien der schönste Brief seit langem. Ein Sprengsatz in eine globale Zukunft ("All around us is a part of us" - Popsimonova), deren Fortgang wir alle selbst bestimmen können und werden... denn "We are many and we are angry, we are the majority" (Zarkoff).

Ein tanzbarer Brief zugleich, denn (frei nach Emma Goldmann):
Wenn wir nicht tanzen können, wäre es nicht unsere Revolution...

Den ersten 25 der ohnehin schon auf 50 Stück limitierten Mini-CD Falling Down Tonight / Voluntary Work Camp ist eine in durchsichtiger Single-Hülle verpackte CD mit dem POPSIMONOVA-Song Ruby (witzigerweise im Tuesday Mix) beigefügt. Auch hier ist das Artwork erstaunlich, was sich über die Photos leider nur erahnen lässt. Silbern glitzernde Pappe, plastisch und fein bedruckt (Siebdruck???), die Feder auf der Vorderseite wirkt wie echt, der kleine Flügel auf der Rückseite scheint wie eine Wimper durch die Lochung der CD. Da haben sich die 'Half-Releases' vom 0.5 Label wieder ins Zeug gelegt – und wir dürfen gespannt auf mehr aus dem Hause POPSIMONOVA sein...

6th of July 2012 - Berlin City @ HBC near Alexanderplatz

POPSIMONOVA is an amazing Electro / Industrial / Techno act from Zagreb / Croatia performing live at the STYLE! IT! TAKES! - Event in Berlin this summer.
She is also creating fabulous fashion designs.

POPSIMONOVA started as one of the founding members of the female electro band Dekolaz in Croatia around 2006. After their break up in 2008, she started her new solo project called "Popsimonova", providing a powerful live act and clearly touching doors of the first age of the classic EBM and cult underground electronics. Lana has the sexiest voice and vocal style I've heard in electronic music in ages. Her songs are as vibrating and flickering as a night out in big city nightlife. She never stops and has a wild and lovely attitude.
She's got the style it takes...
